On 7 October 2020, a Coleville, Washington man was checking game cameras in the area near Rocky Creek Road. The sun had set seven minutes earlier, but the sky was clear. The fading glow from the sun, in a clear sky, illuminated the woods. There was no wind.

As he approached a game camera in an area outside of cell phone coverage, he felt as if eyes were upon him. Looking ahead, he saw wolves 30 yards away. The pack showed members 30 yards ahead of him, to the sides, and at least one wolf partially obscured but close behind him.

He was surrounded by wolves. He yelled in an attempt to scare the wolves off. They did not retreat. Instead, they bared their teeth and started growling.

The man was carrying a Browning A-Bolt Mini Medallion rifle in 7mm-08 caliber, topped with an optical sight. To protect himself in the dense cover, he shot one of the menacing wolves in front of him in the chest. The bullet exited the middle of the back near or through the spine. The wolf dropped immediately. The other pack members retreated, howling. From Statesmanexaminer.com:

“The man called us as soon as he managed to get back to a place where he had cell service, and the incident was investigated by the county's wildlife conflict specialist, Jeff Flood, and the state Department of Fish and Game,” said Stevens County Sheriff Brad Manke. “Investigators went to the scene and found the dead wolf. From the evidence, they confirmed the man's story and determined that he acted completely within the law because

The Sheriff recommends that people carry a gun in the woods, if they know how to use it.

Living amongst wolves here in Wis.

I have seen plenty and have many pictures of them off my game cams.

I walk every morning and it is common to see fresh wolf sign/tracks daily.

I go about properly armed.

I would say the same advice could apply to the big city boy as well.. There are a heck of a lot of crazy wild animals running around out there..

For the two-legged predators you need to carry your policeman around with you - otherwise you are not allowed to defend yourself ... it's the law .... /s

In I Love A Mystery's "Bury Your Dead, Arizona" "Jumping" Dick explains to Jack, Doc and Reggie that one of the town was "Et by wolves." The ensuing conversation is somewhat comical.

The author seems to be having some trouble figuring out where this happened.
WTH, both states are pretty far north I guess.
Close enough.

He's is the only Wolf you really have to worry about in PA to the best of my
knowledge, though the coyotes are getting ballsier by the day. One of the
main reasons that I got my PA CCW was so that I could carry my SIG while
hunting. If I see a 'Yote from my stand, I shoot them on the spot. I guess it
is only a matter of time before the wolves start showing up if they are not
already in the PA wilds up north.

Go to the original article and it is very clear. The poster copied a caption from the photograph in the article which makes for confusion.

...........in my trips alone down the Yukon River in recent years I’ve always been entertained by the wolves at night with their howling “way off in the wilderness”. It literally, sometimes, raises the hair on your arm depending how close they are.

But, I’ve always kept my Remington 12 gauge magnum loaded with triple ought laying within arms reach plus my S & W 50 cal and after approximately 900 miles of downriver travel I’m still around.

The three dangers to continued breathing on the Yukon for a good guy by himself are bears, wolves and bad men.....and not necessarily in that order.

We were in the Green Bluff agricultural district north of Spokane a month ago and I met a couple from near Colville, WA. We had our 20 pound doggie with us and the wife began describing her two new Belgian Malinois puppies which were over 50 pounds at six months old. She said they were to protect her livestock from wolves and mountain lions.

Do you need special permit in Canada from Sgt. Preston for carrying the handgun?

I learned my lesson about being armed in wild country when I was about 19.

I had gone hiking in the Guadalupe Mountains in New Mexico, entering the mountains from their east side then driving pretty far in. This is a very remote area. So, I went hiking up a trail and about a mile in beard a loud snarl. A mountain lion was very close by although I could not see it and he quite obviously wanted me to get lost. I froze for some moments then slowly walked backwards then turned to slowly reverse down the trail.

Do not go into wild places unarmed even you’re just going to hang around camp. The only reason humans are the apex predator is because we discovered weapons.
