France and the UK are in the midst of their second month-long lockdowns after rising numbers of COVID-19 cases while headed into the winter months. Both are enforcing tight new restrictions on their populations including closures of pubs, restaurants and other businesses deemed "non-essential".
And now some health officials are even talking "canceling Christmas" as absurd as that sounds. An influential health official in Paris has called for Christmas and New Year's celebrations to be cancelled across the country in statements Tuesday.
Fearing another virus resurgence that will overwhelm medical facilities, Paris hospital director Julien Lenglet told RMC Radio on Tuesday that "without any hesitation, that we ought to cancel Christmas and Saint-Sylvestre" the latter being a reference to traditional New Year's Eve parties.
Lenglet, who specifically oversees Antony Hospital, said the risk is centered on "giant, intergenerational cluster that could be at the origins of a potential new third wave" of the coronavirus, according to Reuters.
"I would say, without any hesitation, that we ought to cancel Christmas and Saint-Sylvestre," emphasized Paris area hospital director Julien Lenglet.
This current lockdown in France which began on Oct.30 is geared in part toward drastically reducing case numbers and mitigating the spread of the virus in hopes that the country can open back up for a 'normal' Christmas season.
Currently France has over 1.8 million confirmed cases, making it the fourth most infected country in the world. And as the New York Times reported Monday, the virus is once again ravaging Europe:
France reported a record 60,486 new cases on Friday and 40,439 on Saturday. While the daily average there has risen by 57 percent over the past two weeks, deaths have increased by 170 percent in the same period.
Regardless, even if French authorities move to ban gatherings over the holidays, we highly doubt the vast majority will adhere to this.
Just before the second lockdown took effect at the end of last month, there appeared to be a mass exodus from major cities to the countryside:
Incredible traffic jam in Paris as people try to leave the city before 9 pm curfew and before confinement begins at midnight. Traffic is barely moving in every direction as far as the eye can see. Lots of honking and frustrated drivers. pic.twitter.com/6Zn2HCxuPl Michael E. Webber (@MichaelEWebber) October 29, 2020
Instead it would more likely simply result in mass protests and a flood of people into the streets to flout the very rules meant to curtail the virus spread.
And as has already been the observed trend, people would simply flee the cities for villages and the countryside, where it would be easier to celebrate the holidays publicly and in peace.
COVID-19 is a gift to control freaks.
Yeah, try proposing that for Muslim holidays.
“Ravages Europe”. Sure. Betcha it ravages people with 2 or more co-morbidities and/or pre-existing conditions especially hard.
Let’s go shopping!!!!
This is not good news.
Have all travel bans between the US and Europe been lifted?
To the extent that Biden had any sort of campaign at all (which is debatable), I think his emphasis was just on “Trump mis-handled COVID”. But if you look at the world, the US has done better than a lot of places.
They said we would have 2 million dead. We’ve got a bit over a tenth of that.
OF course they’d like nothing more than to cancel anything that gives us identity as a culture.
Screw them, even if is is France.
The plague ravaged Europe. This is impacting nursing homes.
Just cancel life and get it over with.
And Theophany, too, I imagine.
But Orthodox Pascha (Easter) is on May 2 in 2021!!! Let’s implement the vaccines and celebrate it together in joy!!!!
Considering all of the false positives and misreported deaths, it's more likely 1/10th of 1/10th of that.
My wife and I just had it.
Went to 4,000 IU D3 every day. Used Zicam every three hours chased down by a small glass of diet tonic water. 1,000 mg vitamin C daily.
20 mg of pepcid (Famotidine in generic) twice a day. 5 - 10 mg of Melatonin at bed time. Also used an OTC cough syrup with an expectorant to help keep my lungs clear.
The doctor blessed the first paragraph when we tested positive. My family doctor added the pepcid and Melatonin when I called him (because I had coronary bypass surgery in 2017).
With that regimen, it was nothing more than a prolonged crappy cold. Only had a mild headache one day. I never lost my taste. Had a small amount of congestion, but coughed it up easily. Never had a bad cough. I never had the fatigue that most people have. That said, went to the gym for a workout last night and was like a limp dishrag when I got home . . . so it has taken some stamina from me temporarily. I am 64.
Full disclosure: Two acquaintances died from COVID in the last two weeks and another spent 2 weeks in ICU on a ventilator. He and one of the deaths were only 61 and were seemingly in decent physical shape. Take-away: it affects different people different ways.
My strategy was to attack the virus with every tool I had to try to beat it down to where my immune system could fight it. I can’t swear that is what made it easier on me, but I doubt any of that hurt me.
How long do you think you had it before you started with your regimen?
How did you find out you had it?
What is 4,000 IU D3?
Thank you.
I heard that headline read in the voice of the late Alan Rickman for some reason. :P
My wife was exposed on a Tuesday at work. Several co-workers in her office tested positive and were sick. On Saturday night that week, she started coughing, which I knew to be a symptom. I had already bought the vitamins, tonic water and Zicam, so I started taking that part on Saturday night. I really don’t think I would have tested positive when I started taking.
She tested on Monday and got the positive results Tuesday afternoon. I tested Wednesday morning and got positive results on Thursday about noon. I called my doctor and started taking the pepcid and melatonin on Friday
D3 is vitamin D3. IU is simply the measurement for dosage. I took 2,000 IU gel caps twice a day
Thank you very much, filing it away, Just in case. Sounds
like you jumped on it early when you thought you might have it. Catching it early seems to be the ball game.
Thanks again
I agree on early. The folks I know who had trouble with it waited until they started having problems breathing to seek help.
Hope you and your family have a blessed Holiday season.
