The Compromise of 2021
Townhall.com ^ | November 7, 2020 | Jason Garshfield

Posted on 11/07/2020 5:48:56 AM PST by Kaslin

2020 is shaping up to be the most hotly contested presidential election since 1876.

In that inauspicious year, as you may recall, Democrat Samuel Tilden won the popular vote, but after a protracted Electoral College battle, Republican Rutherford B. Hayes was declared the winner in exchange for his promise to end Reconstruction and remove federal troops from the South.

The Compromise of 1877 – as it was called – was a historical tragedy which paved the ways for decades of Jim Crow. However, the precedent it set could be used for nobler purposes today. Donald Trump should take a leaf from the Tilden playbook: in no circumstance should he concede the election without receiving some major concessions in exchange.

As of right now, the outcome of the presidential election is still uncertain. If Joe Biden wins, his position will not be strong. A President Biden would likely face a Republican Senate, which would effectively prevent him from passing any major legislation, or appointing any judges or Cabinet nominees, without bipartisan support. If he tried to rule by executive order, he would be subject to the rulings of a 6-3 conservative Supreme Court and a federal judiciary where a quarter of judges are now Trump appointees.

Still, Republican control of the Senate is far from guaranteed, and Democrats retain a chance of claiming a narrow majority. The American people cannot rely on the whims of that body alone to prevent Democrats from implementing the most radical planks of their 2020 platform. They need another line of defense, and Donald Trump can provide one.

Even if Joe Biden is found to be the clear winner of the Electoral College once all legal votes are counted, Trump will still have plenty of room for mischief. While he likely won’t barricade himself in the White House, he can refuse to concede, call Biden a cheater, and spend his last two months in office sabotaging the executive branch in any way he can. After leaving the White House, Trump can use his vast fortune to pepper Biden with legal challenges and continue to hold rallies all over the United States, loudly proclaiming to raucous crowds that Biden is an illegitimate usurper whose authority should not be respected.

Biden could get this treatment… or he could get a gracious concession speech from Trump and a peaceful and orderly transition of power. In no case should Trump give him the latter without eliciting significant concessions from the Democrats.

This means abandoning all of the radical proposals of Bernie Sanders and the Squad. No Green New Deal, no Medicare-for-All, no assault weapons ban, no Court packing, no D.C. statehood, no Puerto Rico statehood unless a blue state is split in two to create a new red state, no nationwide Covid lockdowns, no critical race theory, no removal of due process for college students accused of Title IX violations, no radical picks for Cabinet positions or judicial vacancies. None of it. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris must both publicly commit themselves to governing as the moderates that they have spent the last several months claiming to be.

If this truly was about saving America from the alleged evils of Trump, and not about implementing a plan to fundamentally reshape America into a democratic socialist nation, then here is Democrats’ chance to prove it by agreeing to a Biden presidency in exchange for a centrist policy agenda.

Lest I be accused of defeatism, allow me to emphasize that there is no reason yet to accept Trump as the loser of the election. However, if the prospect for a Trump victory grows bleak in the coming weeks, then this sort of deal will serve as an insurance policy against the worst tendencies of the Democratic Party. While the Compromise of 1877 did great and lasting harm to our nation, a similarly concocted Compromise of 2021 might save it, ensuring that we are governed by a moderate coalition rather than a junta of fringe left-wing activists hell-bent on foisting their radical agenda upon the rest of us.

Why do I get the feeling that Trump’s presidency cost a lot of people a lot of money, power and influence???

Keep in mind that once Trump is out of the White House-—IF he is out of the White House-—he will never be accorded the same treatment as Zero or W. He will be the subject of criminal proceedings at the federal and at the SDNY level. If they don’t have a case, they will invent one. All his children will be charged with something.

I made a similar comment. Communists need to make examples of their enemies, to instill fear in anyone considering thinking about something similar.

President Trump will be destroyed at the hands of the Communists, however, he can take solace that he will be remembered -- if only by us -- as equivalent to the Founding Fathers, who pledged their lives and their sacred honor to the idea of a free America. Most of those people ended up destroyed, as well.

This incredible man did every bit as much as the Founding Fathers. May he be remembered for his coming sacrifice.

I do not look to the USSC here to be our savior...

How could it be otherwise? In Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania current law allocates electoral votes based on popular vote. For the legislatures to suddenly change that and have the them allocate electoral votes would require them to pass legislation to do so after the fact. I guarantee you that any such legislation would wind up in the courts and would almost certainly reach the Supreme Court. So at the end of the day it would be the Supreme Court being Trump's saviour.

OK, I understand all of that and know with certainty that if Biden is President they will tear Trump a new one, maybe several new ones.

But...... Trump is still President. Can’t he go on assault during the time left and kill off his attackers beforehand?

No.
We don’t need to get the pyre ready yet, we need to fight and we need to keep on fighting until the vote is counted fairly and the States with tainted voting like Georgia are re-voted or the State Legislatures declares the vote tainted and make elector slates for POTUS.
Not one cent not one iota of submission to the tyranny of the coup.
Hitting on all comers may not make you “the man” but supporting our President is the ultimate aphrodisiac.

If Biden is declared POTUS, Trump should dump all the Hunter laptop materials including all the salacious photos. The US lame stream media will again try to ignore or cover up these materials, but they cannot be ignored for long. Trump should also immediately fire FBI Director Wray and temporarily appoint someone who will light a fire under the slow walking FBI investigation of Hunter’s money laundering. Trump should also fire up the Durham investigation. Time for scorched earth.

Medicare for all is overwhelmingly popular, by content if not by name.

It is one of many examples how the voters cannot enact their wishes when both parties donors oppose them.

If Trump had enacted his “health plan” that would “cover everyone”, as he promised to do, he would have cruised to re-election.

It all comes down to trust, and with 'Rats, you can never, ever trust them.. The compromise suggested depends on the value one places in their solemn word of honor. But the 'Rats have demonstrated time and again that they are without honor, just raw ambition and lust for power over others. This is especially true of the current and recent generations of 'Rats. Sure, they'll give lip service to such a compromise, but when it comes down to a choice between compromise and appeasing their radical factions, they're going to stab you in the back, and justify it with some sort of platitude like "Oh, well, we never agreed to compromise on that." And they'll get away with it because the media will either not report it or find a way to blame the 'Pubs for the failure to compromise.

Larry, as Rush has said many times, you cannot compromise with those who hate you and are not capable of telling the truth or rational thought. Defeat and prevent!!!

Townhall has begun a downfall like Foxnews if this is now an acceptable edit.

Larry, what the hell happened in GA? That’s all fraud too and Trump Campaign seems to act like they’ve won Georgia while they keep falling behind? A Republican Governor and SoS can’t het this done right? Kemp has been a disgrace in all of this.

If Biden is seated, EVERY election from here forward will be nothing but a fraud. Any reasonable person would immediately de-register as a voter, you’d merely be perpetuating fraud to even participate. There is no Senate runoff, no 2022, no 2024 - they will ALL be the same thing as 2020.

People who say “we’ll smash them in 2022” are just being fools who don’t understand the reality around them. Once fraud rules the day, it will ALWAYS rule every day from here forward. You will NEVER get the Democrats to agree to change anything about election processes, to clean them up to prevent fraud - fraud won for them -and they would have to agree because they have the power to stop any reform.

It is malignant cancer, you must kill it here and now, or it’ll kill you.

Real question for you Larry...

Why do you think the Georgia election is not redeemable?

I mean, as opposed to Wisc, Mich and Penna?

Each one is a hard row to hoe, and Georgia, it seems to me, is not different in this regard.

Have the same question.

Why give up on GA??

Also....GA has a Repub controlled legislature, both chambers....AND Gov.

The SOS seems shady, from what I’ve read, here.

Georgia was “won” with fraud as blatant and open as Michigan, Pennsylvania or Wisconsin. Any challenges in the three states you are listing as key MUST also include Georgia. The exact same fraud was committed on a massive scale in Atlanta. Atlanta is no different than Philly, Milwaukee and Detroit. You can’t just discard or write off Georgia...it’s the same thing. Georgia has Republican control of the legislature as well.

The only difference is that Georgia has an apparently worthless, useless Republican Governor.

Can Trump’s lawyers confiscate the machines (assuming it’s not too late). Is it possible these machines had a way to manipulate them via flash drive or externally? I mean these spikes happened in huge dumps, with no GOP observers.

Yeah, the governor finally spoke up yesterday, but it was too little, too late.

Stinks because Abrams is the agent of this dem machine in GA and she tried to do the same to Kemp

He ought to break the record for blanket federal pardons for everyone including himself.

Note that you then have the "Harry Reid" problem of having to sleep in the bed you made...
