It started with a half-serious, flippant comment in the kitchen. The phone rang loudly, startling me, and I dropped a bowl full of carefully cut vegetables. Frustrated, I blurted out to my husband, Ive had enough of ringing and dinging and tweeting. I want to turn off our devices.
All of them?
All of them.
Even the remote? It was radical, but the idea was building up momentum. I could feel a supernatural quiet in my heart.
Yes.
For how long?
Just 24 hours.
Why? His question had the quiver of a man facing a death squad.
I dunno, to be free of materialism? To live a few quiet hours uninterrupted? To be untraceable?

Try it. You’ll like it.
When I was home and the children were youn we kept the sabbath. It was a nice time.
“The phone rang loudly, startling me,”
It’s called “silent mode.” Try it.
I have a tree to take down later today so I’m savoring my time on FreeRepublic ;’}
“If you cut on it long enough, it will fall over.”
I have a Samsung Galaxy S10+ on T-Mobile. My phone was set to silent last night. (In fact it was set to “do not disturb”). At 7 this AM, it dinged and buzzed multiple times. You see, it turned itself off DND, and felt it was important to let me know that I was getting spam in my hotmail account. I woke up long enough to turn it BACK to mute, which makes noise as its own process (and caused my wife to grumble). 30 minutes later, it again turned itself back on and started making noises. Ergo, turning the phone to silent mode does not work when our overlords want to speak and really want us to listen.
I cant stand it when people say lets turn off devices. If you want to turn yours off, turn it off. But dont go having ideas of what I should do.
Dropped vegetables because you were startled by a ringing phone. Nervous type... stay indoors where youll be safe.
