Wait, what really happened at the United States Consulate General in Hong Kong on October 27 when four young anti-China activists suddenly turned up at the gates with the intention of seeking asylum?
The official silence from the US and Beijing governments has been deafening which is kind of understandable, given the high political sensitivity and potential for a damaging flare-up at a time of extreme tensions between the two powers, with Hong Kong caught in the middle but lets look at what we do know so far.
One of our reporters personally witnessed the four running up Garden Road in Central and being stopped at the gate by security guards who then let them into the compound after a short discussion. The next thing we learned, amid an otherwise total information blackout, was that they had been unceremoniously shown the door.
The activists hit back the next day through a Britain-based group helping them, claiming they had first been encouraged to approach the premises in a prior agreement with the consulate. One of them, who is apparently an American citizen, said he had initially called the consulates emergency hotline and was told by staff that he was eligible for help. Along with another unidentified American citizen, he had also negotiated bringing his fellow activists to the consulate, and was assured that they would all be allowed in if they turned up, according to the group.

Just lost my support.
State Department has been packed full of communist sympathizers since Woodrow Wilson.
They should all be fired then HANGED!
American citizens dont need to ask for asylum; they just need to leave Hong Kong and get back to the US. If the activists in Hong Kong believed they were fighting for the US, they are mistaken. They should have been fighting for their own freedoms. They werent hung out to dry by anyone.
One of SCMP’s resident Party animals. And a Tibetan quisling, in the bargain. I’d be interested to know what actually happened. It would not be surprising if his account is as accurate as the official Chinese coronavirus death toll, i.e. invented out of whole cloth.
Obama /Biden white house outed many chinese CIA agents in China and the result was all were tortured and killed along with family members. This is the man many want in the white house, unbelievable!
I wonder if some of these American citizens are the product of labor tourism - fly to the US, deliver a baby, fly back home. How many US citizens are out there that have never even been to the US? That's why they seek asylum.
Whether we liked it or not, Hong Kong was ceded back to China by Great Britain. What this means is that for diplomatic purposes it is treated as a Chinese city no different than Beijing or Shanghai.
Hong Kong was ceded to PRC by treaty....by Britain.
The US has no interests there whether considering relations with PRC or not.
Folks, Hong Kong is just another city in the PRC by treaty and by international law.
And the Chinese consulate in San Francisco would call the cops on 4 Americans if they showed up at their gate asking for asylum in China. And certainly would not let them in the door.
Since then I get back every couple of years and with every visit I'm amazed how much more like a mainland Chinese city it has become.
I'd say within 5 years it will be indistinguishable from Peking or Shanghai and those “dissidents” who didn't get out will never be heard from again..
Every person in every bad country has a similar demand they could make of us, but they have no standing to expect we accept them.
This was a British colony. Britain should be on the hooknot the US.
I think these people are Hong Kongers, I do not believe any actual Americans, are stuck in China.
Really sympathise with them, but technically they are now, Chinese.
The Chinese sort of jumped the turnover date up by 20 years, but that is really sort of Britain’s goof.
Sad, what is happening, but it really is in one way, a internal Chinese matter.
