Earthquake in the Aegean rattles Greece and Turkey
BBC News ^ | October 30, 2020

A powerful earthquake has struck off Turkey's Aegean coast, north of the Greek island of Samos, officials said.

The 7.0 magnitude tremor, about 17km (11 miles) off the coast of western Izmir province, was felt as far away as Athens and Istanbul, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

There was no word on casualties but images from the Turkish city of Izmir showed buildings that had collapsed.

An earthquake that struck Izmir in 1999 killed about 17,000 people.

Reports said Friday's quake was also felt on the Greek island of Crete. Video on social media showed people searching through the rubble of collapsed buildings.

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - A strong earthquake of magnitude of up 7.0 struck the Aegean Sea on Friday and was felt in both Turkey and Greece, local and international observatories said.

People flooded to the streets in the Turkish coastal city of Izmir after the earthquake, witnesses said. Footage from Turkish state broadcaster TRT Haber showed a collapsed building in central Izmir.

Residents of Samos, an island with a population of about 45,000, were urged to stay away from coastal areas, Eftyhmios Lekkas, head of Greece’s organisation for anti-seismic planning, told Greece’s Skai TV.

“It was a very big earthquake, it’s difficult to have a bigger one,” said Lekkas.

They are still have weekly 2.X quakes in Sparta NC. Really odd. Nothing even close to that anywhere else on the East Coast.

“Tell the band to play louder.” On September 9 1922, 100 thousand plus people crowded the docks of Smyrna trying to escape rape murder and fire from the Turks as they slaughtered Greeks and Armenians in the city. French English and American warships anchored off the dock were under orders not to intervene. The French held an event on their deck with a band playing. The music couldn’t drown out the screams coming from the dock and the rest of the city. The leader of the French is quoted as saying “Tell the band to play louder”.

Thank you for the link. Very interesting. The whole graphics blinked at the beginning of that quake.

What phenomenon do you find affects ham radio transmissions most?

I’ve been busy this weekend, so just getting back to your reply and questions. The full page blink is where I edited the speed from 120 down to 60 times actual speed so that’s sloppy editing on my end. Regarding ham radio, there was an article on eham about skip from ionsphere charging during large quakes and I found a very detailed TedX video that explains ‘hot spots’ from thermal satellite images that gets so much attention lately. I’ll have to look for that bookmark when I get to my computer at my shop tomorrow afternoon... (If looters don’t burn it down /sarc)
