The years 1917, 1924 and 1932 were ominous in Russian, Italian and German history respectively.
In each case, the elections of those years would be the last free elections for quite some time. The electoral process went haywire, and totalitarians of one stripe or another seized control.
There is a widespread fear that 2020 will be a similar year for the United States, and that we’re about to hold the last free election for the foreseeable future.
At first, this seems absurd. Trump is no Hitler, and Biden is no Lenin. In terms of method and ideology, neither candidate approaches Francisco Franco, let alone Castro or Mussolini.
Yet there are some truly worrisome signs. Changing election rules in the middle of the game, intimidating into silence those with opposing views, and angry, sometimes violent, street demonstrations are straight from the totalitarian playbook.
Also worrisome is the nation’s drift toward the totalitarian view that it’s the government’s job to solve all our problems. Got economic problems? Let the government fix them. Got social problems? Let the government fix them. Not happy? Let the government make you happy. The more powerful the government, the better off we will be.
But power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Sooner or later, political leaders are going to do something horrible unless there are other societal institutions strong enough to challenge and balance government power.
The trouble for Russia, Italy and Germany was that, in each case, institutions that might have opposed government abuses were either already weak before the totalitarians took over or were quickly taken over for government purposes.
The Russian communists executed tens of thousands of priests, and closed all but a handful of churches. Similarly, Hitler launched a Kirchenkampf, a multi-phase effort to eradicate Christianity.

People who have power want to retain it and will fight to do so. The constant refrain has been for Trump to drain ‘The Swamp’ which is many things but most powerfully it is those unelected persons, bureaucrats, with regulatory power. Who are the known facilitators of Trump’s 4 year battle with the ‘Resistance’? He has been hobbled but another 4 years can make a real difference!

But now that I’ve spent some time connecting a lot of dots, I’ve come to the realization that that’s what we, and Trump are up against, and this is definitely a war that we and Trump must win.

Trump outlawing racist diversity training occurred this year. I remember sitting through similar events at defense contractors five years ago, because the Obama administration gave defense contractors preference if they were doing so. It was done by using the “out and equal index” and other far left metrics to gauge “diversity and inclusion” at companies.
