A man in Florida was sentenced on Wednesday for fatally shooting down a Jacksonville police K-9 named Fang as he attempted to escape arrest two years ago.

Jhamel Malik Paskel, 19, received a 25-year sentence in Duval County Circuit Court after being tried as an adult after being arrested at 17 on six charges including the shooting of the dog, armed carjacking and kidnapping.

He received five years for the dog's death and a 20-year sentence for the other charges, according to News4Jax.

The teen's defense attorney had previously asked for leniency for Paskel as he faced up to 35 years behind bars.

Speaking during a two-hour hearing last week, Paskel noted that he was 17 years old at the time of the crimes but apologized and said he was 'a man ready to take responsibility for the mistakes I made as a child'.

'I would like to offer my apologies and condolences to Officer Herrera for not only the killing of his K-9 partner Fang, but his best friend,' he said.

'I want to apologize to the victims for scaring them that night. And I owe my mother the biggest apology for letting her down.'

Paskel, who completed his high school diploma in jail, spoke on Wednesday only to say he understood as he was sentenced from jail via Zoom.

His mother was also on the virtual sentencing. She had previously told the judge that Paskel has learning disabilities and drug problems, and that she is continuing efforts to help him. Paskel was tried as an adult despite being 17 years old at the time of his crimes +8

In California you can murder a person and plea bargain it down to an 18 year sentence and be out of prison in 9 years.

The dog was worth a hundred times more than this worthless waste of oxygen and space.

Obviously you are not thinking like a Christian at this moment. Whether we like it or not, in God's eyes he's as valuable as we are, and far more valuable than any animal, as flawed as he is.

HIs obviously lawyer-coached statement (I doubt if he understood half of it!) was disgusting.

It is a good statement; whether it is sincere or not is between him and his maker, and not really something we are capable of judging, or should judge, lest we be held to the same scrutiny. He may have time to demonstrate his sincerity, but only time will tell.

He has no remorse actually and would do it again in a minute.

Possibly, but you don't know that, you are not privy to his inner thoughts, only God is.

You'll only be forgiven to the extent that you forgive: "...and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive others who trespass against us..."

The dog looks significantly smarter than that worthless POS.

Hope his life is short and not sweet.

Based on his name I’m guessing the victim was Chinese.

he was 'a man ready to take responsibility for the mistakes I made as a child'.

Good to hear. Serve your time.

(So a 17 y/o boy is a child, but a 17 y/o girl is an autonomous woman who can get an abortion without parental notification?)

No thug scumbag is more valuable than any one of my four dogs in my eyes. They are loving and never hurt a human being in their lives. I would value them over any thug criminal. If I was put in a situation where I could only save their lives or that scumbag, I would choose to save them without hesitation. If that makes me un-Christian, then so be it.
