With regard to COVID, we are awash in unreliable or even intentionally misleading empirical claims. A neurosurgeon from D.C. who understands statistics analyzes a popular claim that is being made on behalf of mask mandates.
I encountered a Washington Post figure making its way through social media, suggesting that not wearing masks is conclusively the reason for COVID spread:

If they did, why are the number of cases increasing in the areas/regions requiring that they be worn in public?

Mostly no. Like 90% mostly no.
Look at it this way. Masks reduce the risk of getting Covid. Just like driving slower reduces the risk of killing yourself in a car crash.
my mother, who was my 90 year old grandmother’s care taker, went out only two times in the last month... 1 time to CVS, another time to the grocery store. She wore a mask both times. My mother contracted Covid (tested positive). Unfortunately, she gave it to my grandmother (tested positive). Long story short, my grandmother passed away Sunday morning from Covid in the hospital after about 10 days of fighting it. Was at her ‘bedside’ when she passed via facetime. Been a rough few days. The ONLY way my mother could’ve contracted it was when wearing a mask at either the grocery store or at CVS. This is in a small town in New Mexico.
You probably need to sue the State Health Director and the US CDC Director for fraud. They have publicly stated that you can’t catch COVID if you wear a mask. Make them prove it in court.
Mandates don’t work. They just piss people off more than anything and then you get people who are defiant and look for ways to circumvent the requirement.
That says nothing about the effectiveness of the masks themselves. A properly made mask worn correctly reduces the volume and range of respiratory droplets, which is the primary transmission vector for SARS-CoV-2. Poorly made masks will be less effective at trapping the droplets or slowing their velocity. Poorly worn masks will provide very little help to anyone.
There’s also the issue of when and where. As President Trump has said on this issue, they’re helpful in the appropriate situation. Specifically, we’re talking about while indoors in a public place (e.g. grocery store, shopping mall, etc.). Outdoors there’s virtually no chance of transmission. At the beach? Ridiculous. In the park? Absurd. Unless you’re shoulder to shoulder with people at an Antifa riot, there’s so little risk of transmission outdoors that a mask isn’t doing anything anyway.

That’s completely contrary to everything I’ve seen and read from anyone with any sort of health background. The purpose of masks is not to protect the mask wearer from contracting COVID-19. The purpose of the mask is to reduce the range and volume of the respiratory droplets that are the primary transmission vector for SARS-CoV-2. That only happens when a person who is infected is wearing a mask. The mask blocks or slows the majority of the droplets.
And that merely reduces the risk of transmission. No one that I’ve seen has ever claimed it’s anywhere near foolproof. N95 masks worn by both the infected and the uninfected would not be considered foolproof. Vastly reduced risk? Sure. Foolproof? No.
Proper masks and PPE procedures work. Unfortunately the “experts” and media have fooled a majority of the people in the US in to believing that their lives depend on wearing cloth masks. It’s almost criminal in my eyes, and when something really bad comes along (and it will) people are going to die in droves, because they will turn to their trusty cloth masks for defense.

There’s no scientific evidence to prove masks prevent the spread of the covid virus.

If masks worked then places where they are most mandated and used would not see surges.

The only real numbers to care about are how many are hospitalized, how many die and at what age, how many have comorbidity issues, and how many were treated early like with HCQ/Zinc and other meds now available.
The number of “cases” is nearly irrelevant.

So trips to the ENDO picked up when I tripped over the Type 2 Diabetic line, 4 pill meds reactions, put on Humalog 75/25 Flexpen, playing witth dosages.
Drug store, Navy base Pharmacy, grocery store as I found the Pickup Unsatifactory. Wore somple cloth mask.
Never got sick. Just followed common hygine practices.
BTW hubby is 80 and other that existing stuff Sinus Allergies hit both of us. Both had Bornchitis in Jan, his turned to walking pneumonia.

And again... if that’s true why are cases going up in areas requiring masks be worn?

Luckily “slow droplets” are less infectious. All of the doctors and nurses I have spoken to acknowledge that masks are for show and control purposes and completely worthless for stopping virus transmissions.
Republicans, ignore the Democrat campaign of lies and fear. Wear masks. Vote! Your country is calling you!
Democrats plan to give statehood to Puerto Rico and Washington D.C...and maybe a California split to afford even more Democrat electoral votes. That’s another part of the plan to permanently prevent a Republican majority in the Senate.
Then there’s the plan for ending the legislative filibuster and instituting absolute gun control including a return to pistol bans. You see, after the takeover, they’ll own the military and police forces and plan to make examples of a few people every week with pre-dawn raids for firearms confiscations in nearly every locale: a campaign of terror and control.
That’s what you really have to fear. Vote next Tuesday! Vote like your lives and the lives of your descendants depend on it!
