As the U.S. Senate on Monday voted 52-48 to confirm Trump-appointed Judge Amy Coney Barrett to serve on the nation's nine-member Supreme Court, the four progressive congresswomen comprising the so-called Squad advocated for increasing the number of justices on the nation's high court.

"Expand the court," Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York tweeted.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez @AOC · Oct 26, 2020 US House candidate, NY-14 Expand the court. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez @AOC US House candidate, NY-14 Republicans do this because they don’t believe Dems have the stones to play hardball like they do. And for a long time they’ve been correct. But do not let them bully the public into thinking their bulldozing is normal but a response isn’t. There is a legal process for expansion. 7:21 PM · Oct 26, 2020 222.4K 38K people are Tweeting about this

Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota echoed Ocasio-Cortez's sentiment.

"Remember that Republicans have lost 6 of the last 7 popular votes, but have appointed 6 of the last 9 justices," Omar tweeted. "By expanding the court we fix this broken system and have the court better represent the values of the American people."

Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan also tweeted her support for the concept.

"We are going to take back the White House & Senate next week with a resounding mandate from the people to fight back against Trump’s illegitimately stacked judiciary. We must expand the Court if we’re serious about the transformational change the people are crying out for," Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan tweeted.

Rep. Ayanna Presley of Massachusetts retweeted a video calling for court expansion.

After the Senate's confirmation vote on Monday night, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas administered the Constitutional oath to Barrett during a White House ceremony. Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the judicial oath during a private ceremony on Tuesday, after which Barrett will be permitted to participate in her new role on the court.

Until recently I thought that the Constitution set the number of Supreme Court justices at nine. I was wrong. The Constitution gives Congress the power to set that number. And they could pick any number they want. It would all be quite legal.

Absent a presidential veto, a Democrat Congress could set the number at, say, 12 (I’ve heard that number mentioned). Of course a Republican Congress could do the same.

Or shrink it. What’s to stop R’s from saying “Nah, 15 is too many. We’re going back to 9 and fire the most recently appointed justices”?

Under the Constitution these are lifetime appointments. They would be grandfathered in, and couldn't be dropped without an impeachment.

They could go the other way. Bring it from 15 to 23. Then the Dems will bring it from 23 to 31. etc. etc.

As a side note to this thread, please note the following.

Consider that federal Democratic lawmakers get around 1st Amendment prohibition of laws that prohibit the free exercise of religious expression by doing the following.

Elite, post-17th Amendment Democratic lawmakers fight tooth-and-nail to maintain a Supreme Court majority of activist, anti-religious expression justices who legislate such laws from the bench without fear of impeachment and removal thanks to those same Democrats.

Send “Orange Man Bad” federal and state government desperate Democrats home in November!

Supporting PDJT with a new patriot Congress and state government leaders that will promise to fully support his already excellent work for MAGA and stopping SARS-CoV-2 will effectively give fast-working Trump a “third term” in office imo.

I don’t see any problem with voting Republican ticket for 2020 elections.

Insights welcome.

While the appointments themselves are lifetime, I wonder if that guarantees that the seat itself will survive as long as they do.

If THEY can 'expand the court' so can the Republicans!....

House MAJORITY Leader McCarthy should definitely take Sandy cortez up on her offer, once he's sworn in after the election.

Play hardball and say "We can either pack the SCOTUS right now with more Conservative judges, and we don't need your votes to do so - OR, you go along with a new Constitutional amendment to formalize and limit the SCOTUS to 9 and we can stop with the nonsense already."

The day after the election with Trump and Mitch both victorious, I look forward to the announcement of a court expansion bill.

So Trump gets re-elected and decides to expand the court.

He’s got a nice pool of conservative judges to choose from.

Watch the left melt down like Fukushima.

The right wing nutjobs want to pack the courts.

The sensible, scientific and morally incorruptible progressive warrior poets want to “expand it” so that black children stop getting shot by police and women don’t have to be breeding slaves to Christian men.

Oh my God. I just typed that out as a joke but this is exactly what these idiots think.
