In a parallel with current events, a new film recalls the 1969 trial of the Chicago 7. Author urges progressive Christians organize and fight in order to win.
'Chicago 7' film about iconic '60s trial disappoints
Netflix's newly released film "The Trial of the Chicago 7," recalls when the Youth International Party (or Yippie) leaders along with six others were tried in 1969 by the federal government for conspiracy to incite a riot during demonstrations at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August 1968.
Viewers will see ample parallels to our time in this flat and too staid film. Throughout the summer, we witnessed protests and social upheaval, police militarization, their excessive force and employment of tear gas, particularly when cops cleared Lafayette Park near the White House for President Donald Trump's publicity stunt.
Trump's calls for law and order echo the 1968 era calls of Richard Nixon and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, and his appeals to white supremacists mirror George Wallace's, who won five southern states in that year's presidential election.
Author urges progressive Christians to organize, fight not dialogue
Guthrie Graves-Fitzsimmons' new book, Just Faith: Reclaiming Progressive Christianity, reminds reviewer Kelly Stewart of something a progressive Catholic activist told her years ago: "Jesus said to pray for our enemies. He didn't say we wouldn't have enemies." His point was that progressive Christians should not be sentimental about the Gospel or naïve about the realities of struggles for justice.
Graves-Fitzsimmons began Just Faith in the aftermath of the 2016 election, and the alliance between President Donald Trump and the Christian right forms its backdrop. But where a number of Trump-era progressive Christian writings have promoted dialogue, bridge-building and encounter with conservatives to overcome political "division," Just Faith calls on progressive Christians to organize, fight and win.
“Progressive” Christians are not Christians. They’re Marxists who worship Satan.
Can progressive and Christian, be used in the same sentence?
Only in opposition to one another.
Romans 1:18-32 establishes a fruit that one can look for to judge if someone or something has departed from the knowledge of the Lord if they exhibit that fruit.
If the “progressive” in the bunch you hand out with includes advancing homosexual rights then your choices are to remain and be a friend of the world or leave, either by taking a stand and then be shown the door or just run screaming for your life from a place that’s spiritually dead.
Friendship with the world is enmity towards the Lord.
Good trees simply do not produce this fruit (championing homosexuality or things like gender fluidness, which is a beyond even the former in its badness).
They are even contradictory in process: progressive is gradual perfecting of man, Christian is cloaking in the complete perfection of Christ.
You’re not a Christian if you are a Progressive.
Only if you like oxymorons.
Progressive Christian.
Is that like a good devil?
In this case, I surely dont. 😁🤣
I assume punlicantion should be publication? 8>)
Oh, they like his fracking stance? His taxation ideas? His climate change ideas?
How can they put those minor issues above the killing of babies?
Just think what could be possible if those 70% would vote correctly.
I'm not a Christian, but I know that killing babies and other innocent humans is wrong. Abortion is my litmus test of any politician.
“Jesus said to pray for our enemies.”
I do.
I pray they all go to Hell”
Actually - why the world “progressive”?
Because Marx, by his faulty analysis, determined that communism lies in our future. The more you work in advancing communism, the more “progressive” you are.
In reality, Marxists were always the most regressive movement there ever existed. Wherever they took charge, they, at their best, stopped all real progress. Just frozen in time mediocrity.
The only progress comes with dynamic free marked society!
It is funny how the words changed meanings. At least in economy terms, Trump is the real progressive, the neo marxist are the real backward “conservatives”. God saves us from them!
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. - Mt 7:22-23
If one is not “sentimental” about the gospel, one is not Christian.
