Cats, glass windows and vehicles: These pose the biggest threats to birds in the United States. But President Donald Trump is continuing to falsely claim that wind turbines are to blame for the deaths of the nation's birds.
During Thursday night's final presidential debate between the president and former Vice President Joe Biden, Mr. Trump reiterated his stance against wind energy with a peculiar claim: It "kills all the birds."
"I know more about wind than you do," Mr. Trump told Biden when moderator Kristen Welker turned to the topic of climate change. "It's extremely expensive. Kills all the birds. It's very intermittent. Got a lot of problems."
According to a recent study, North America has lost more than a quarter of its bird population since 1970, a possible sign of an ecological crisis. And while wind turbines are responsible for some bird deaths, they are nowhere near the biggest threat to bird populations in the nation.
According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, cats are the number one threat to birds, responsible for approximately 2.4 billion bird deaths each year. Collisions with building glass are the next deadliest threat, killing about 599 million birds, followed by collisions with vehicles, which cause about 214.5 million bird deaths.

My cat has never killed a falcon or an owl or a bald eagle.
I’ve had cats that have been killed by those birds.
My cats would be in favor of wind power.
Here is an observation I had.
How often do you see dead birds. I often see dead squirrels, cats, deer, possums etc. but never birds.
I do some facility space planning for a hospital and was walking down a long corridor the other day. The corridor was about 70 yards long with full floor to ceiling glass on one side overlooking a little park-like outdoor space. As I walked along, suddenly toward one end, I heard a big ‘Wham!’ and the glass shook.
When I got to the end I saw a hawk and a pigeon both lying dead and a couple of red blotches on the glass about 10 feet up. The hawk was chasing the pigeon. The pigeon was too concerned about what was behind him to focus on what was ahead and the hawk was a little too focused on it’s next meal.
Sucks. That hawk was a beautiful bird.
LOL, Trump trolls them so hard.
The other day he warned the crowd he was going to say something that would make their heads explode.... that toilets need water to work. He knew it’d create a flurry of news stories....sure enough the next day...
I have a long route that I walk a few days a week. Most suburban, single family homes.
I see the dead critters in the streets. I see an occasional deer that doesn’t make it over the spiked fence. I see dead birds as often as the others. Just on lawns or in the gutter of the street.
They get eaten by other critters pretty quickly. Everyone likes chicken.
If it happens often enough to actually capture it on camera, then it must happen pretty often.

Ours brought one into the house once (not dead), got clear upstairs before the bird got loose. That was not a fun time. Did something similar with a mouse a couple months ago. Fortunately, the cat cornered the mouse (this was like 24 hours later) in the bedroom, such that it went into the trap under the nightstand. He must try to keep them alive, to play with for awhile.
Now I TRY to remember to really check that the cat is coming in ALONE, no matter what time of night it is.
Dave Winfield was notorious for killing a seagull in Toronto. Billy Martin IIRC said it’s impossible that Winfield intentionally tried to hit the seagull as he hadn’t hit the cutoff man all season. All was forgiven later when Winfield joined the Jays and helped them win their first World Series. :)

A few years ago, I was getting ready for a bike ride around 6am. I’m standing outside my house when a flock of about 8 ducks come flaring in for a landing. They all bounced off my front window in a cacophony of quacks, slams and thumps, They all rolled backwards. A couple literally shook their heads then they all flew off.
Cats produce far more elec than those stupid windmills!
Well, my cat is guilty as charged. He left me a half-chewed English Sparrow this morning.
But, we don’t like those imported & invasive sparrows, anyhow. ;)

I call BS on the windows killing argument for small birds. I grew up in house on a river bluff near a nature preserve. Although birds did run into windows, I don't remember ever having to clean up the mess...
I've studied IWTs extensively (including commenting on failures in judicial hearings) and can tell you that the issue of gearbox maintenance is just one aspect in a plethora of important issues related to this equipment. The one issue that the public is only mildly aware of is the scam nature of them since from a big picture perspective, they don’t actually contribute to a net increase in power. I can’t explain this without going into deep weeds but let me offer this at a very high level.... the scam nature occurs because of the random nature of IWT (and solar for that matter) and the fact that this means that full backup is required. It logically follows then that if IWTs and solar are given priority to the grid, this means that some other generator(s) has to back off when the sun is shining and/or wind blowing. If that generator that has backed off is gas or coal fired, it means that it will be operating at a less efficient operating point. If you are talking about hydraulic power, it’s called ‘spilling the water’ which means that the equipment built to generate power is idled. It gets more complicated than this of course (and far worse) but this should be enough to get the picture....
The President mentioned birds but the other issues dwarf the bird issue....

I had a terrible problems with bats at my last farm. I had SIX of them flappin’ around in the house one evening. That was fun.
NOT! (I got them all out safely; they’re protected Brown Bats)
About $12K later, I had the attic cleaned, sealed, sanitized and re-insulated. Had to be done before I could sell the house. *I* certainly wouldn’t have bought a house with free-range bats, LOL!
But that was nothing compared to the New York Sewer-Sized RATS that lived in all of the outbuildings when I first bought it. After we killed ‘The Mother of all Rats’ (about the size of a Chihuahua!) they all went away.
Nature usually wins, but I pushed her back a little those two times. :)
