Hey, guess what? Food shortages are coming back!
The Takeout ^ | October 21, 2020 | Aimee Levitt

Remember those great early-pandemic days last spring when bags of flour and yeast suddenly became precious items? Wasn’t that fun? Well, great news, everybody: we’re going to get to experience them all over again. As we’ve noted before, grocers are a little more prepared this time around and have been stocking “pandemic pallets” of food they can reorder quickly, but some things will still be hard to find. Mashed has thoughtfully prepared a list:

Baking supplies. It’s now chilly enough to turn the oven on again, plus the spectre of holiday baking looms

Canned soups. Both General Mills and Campbell’s are still behind in production after the increased demand during the first wave of the pandemic (because what is an easier meal for people who don’t know how to cook than heating up a can of soup?). Officials say they hope to be back to full capacity again in January, but just in case... maybe try making your own soup?

Soda pop. Remember the aluminum can shortage? We’re still feeling its repercussions. In order to make sure there’s enough aluminum to accommodate its best-sellers like Coke and Dr. Pepper, Coca-Cola has been rejiggering its production so that niche favorites like Fresca and Caffeine-Free Diet Coke have been getting short shrift . Snacks. Frito-Lay, Pepperidge Farm, and other snack producers have been letting the public know, via Twitter, about the products they’ve paused or cut off completely. A moment of silence, please, for Tostitos Black Beans and Garlic, Kickin’ Chicken Taco Pringles, and Geneva cookies. . Spam. Hormel CEO Jim Snee reported that the company has 24% less inventory of all its products than it did at this time last year, and production may be slowed again if there are any more cases of COVID-19 among workers.

I'm seeing signs of shortages in beautiful mid-Michigan (spectacularly beautiful right now).

For quite a while I could get chuck roast on sale for 3.59/lb, even at Whole Foods just a couple of weeks ago. Now, my local mega-mart is advertising chuck roast on sale for $5.99/lb, displayed prominently in their sales flyer as if it's a great deal.

Stores are running out of cans on my preferred brew. This is getting serious!

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. You can be sure that prices will be quite high even if turkey and other holiday staples are in ample supply. Cash in on the buying panic, ya know.

All through the covid thing, certain things have been in short supply temporarily, then they get them in again. Then other things run out.

The worst thing now is to write articles about shortages returning - that will just cause panic buying again. So I’m glad you posted this late at night. Hopefully few people will see it.

There is going to be a lot of shortages from many sources because of the COVID19 hoax. Winter is coming, many of us in the northern parts depend on good strong batteries for our vehicles and equipment. One of the huge battery suppliers, Interstate, evidently was not able to keep up with demand because of reduced output. They make very good batteries.

Interesting about the roast. I don’t buy roast or steak, but ground round is on sale here this week at one chain for $3.99 a pound.

One thing I found in short supply is canned pumpkin! I had decided to start getting stocked for the holidays in case it took a couple weeks to locate items. I assume it’s due to the aluminum shortage.

“The worst thing now is to write articles about shortages returning - that will just cause panic buying again. “

I hesitated posting the article because I didn’t want to stir up panic buying. But there’s no stopping it being reported and exaggerated by the media.

Eventually, supply will catch up with demand, as it always does. I suspect, though, the news not long before the holidays will be exploited. There will be panic buying. It’s inevitable now.

I’m pretty well stocked with frozen and canned food. I reckon I could survive a year with what I have on hand, if I had to.

I went to my local Walmart yesterday, and it looked like a tornado had been through it. More empty shelves. It looked more like a going-out-of-business sale. I needed some Draino for my bathtub. They had none. They had some large containers of other brands, but I didn’t need a large one, so I settled on a small bottle of Liquid Plumber.

If you’re a gun nut, you’ve become accustomed to shortages.

OH! THE HORROR!

How will you survive?

We shouldn't have to make those kinds of sacrifices.

The way to cause shortages is to incessantly talk or write about then. They become self fulfilling prophesies.

Hoarding causes short supplies . It looks like others beat you to it.
I assume it’s due to the aluminum shortage.
Aluminum is not used for canning.

2 weeks ago 80/20 was $1.68lb (10 lb packs) at my closest grocery store (here in the Midwest).

What do they expect when they tell you to stay home (with pay) if you feel sick?
I could get chuck roast on sale for 3.59/lb....chuck roast on sale for $5.99/lb, displayed prominently in their sales flyer as if it's a great deal.
You can still get your roast, no shortage, so it is a great deal.

If people are dying they aren't eating. You'd think, if it's true about all these people dying from the virus there would be a surplus of food.

This is not the first article I have seen on this subject. I read one similar about a month ago.

Many spices have been in short supply in eastern VA.
White pepper and smoked paprika took me a while to find and trips to multiple grocery stores.

There are a lot of cars sitting around more, as people work from home. Batteries go dead, as there are a lot of ongoing drains with modern car electronics. Something is energized all the time so that keyless entry system will work, for example. Those dead car batteries have to be replaced.

To keep this from being you, buy a modern electronic float charger and hook it up. I have on the wife’s car and a motorcycle I have.
