Perhaps they should go back to the old method used over 120 years ago.
Like a bank, you go in and up to the counter and tell the clerk what you want. He then sends a boy into the back to fetch it. You pay for it and leave. You never get to go back into the stock room.
Even easier: Close retail area of the store, go internet only, use an Amazon Locker type pickup in the front of the store, with the lockers loaded from the back. No cash on site, no clerk to threaten over a counter.
Your example reminded me of a company called ‘Service Merchandise’.
I recall there were showroom items, but tags that you took to the counter. And the items were brought to you after purchase.
As a kid, thought it was a cool store.

The Service Merchandise Model or any supply house. Its hell on impulse sales and comparison shopping though.
Hmmmm? A full service customer service counter with windows outside the store. You stand in line to talk to a service person, they take your order and give it to an employee to fill, and they will meet you at your transportation with the order. Sort of like the grocery drive up service. Also take phone orders but no customer access to the store.
Maybe a qualification for store entry, ie home address, phone number, bank info, credit rating, job, etc etc. So many avenues to shut down the criminal activity leading to our destruction much less private business being destroyed. Just think of the jobs produced. Then there is the issue of waiting in lines. Shopping will be a chore. So important to have that authorized access to the store for worry free shopping.
