Biden has said he would lock down the country if "science" dictated doing so, but he does not have the authority, and people in many places would not put up with it.

With all the therapeutic advances, HCQ, Ivermectin, etc, why are some countries seeing “more deaths are occurring than at any time in the pandemic”?

I thought cases were growing but deaths coming down.

Surge is a subjective term but in any reasonable understanding of its meaning the NY Times is simply lying.

"As Coronavirus surges..." More fear-mongering headlines. Positive tests or "cases" are not hospitalizations or deaths.

I would argue that an increase in 'cases' without a corresponding increase in deaths is actually a positive development. It simply means that the overall mortality rate is decreasing.

We cannot hide behind symbolic masks from this or any virus. Dr. Sunetra Gupta of Oxford University seems to be one of few voices of reason on this.

We need to protect the vulnerable, and let the virus work its way through the rest of society in order to reach herd immunity.

The goal from the beginning (we were told) was "15 days to flatten the curve" in order to keep the hospitals from being overwhelmed.

That goal has long since been achieved. Now the goal line has been moved to where we must keep these freedom-killing restrictions in place until it can be guaranteed that 'no one ever gets this virus again', which is a scientific impossibility.

To quote from The Great Barrington Declaration (which is been censored by the leftist social media cabal):

Keeping these measures in place until a vaccine is available will cause irreparable damage, with the underprivileged disproportionately harmed.

Fortunately, our understanding of the virus is growing. We know that vulnerability to death from COVID-19 is more than a thousand-fold higher in the old and infirm than the young. Indeed, for children, COVID-19 is less dangerous than many other harms, including influenza.

As immunity builds in the population, the risk of infection to all – including the vulnerable – falls. We know that all populations will eventually reach herd immunity – i.e. the point at which the rate of new infections is stable – and that this can be assisted by (but is not dependent upon) a vaccine. Our goal should therefore be to minimize mortality and social harm until we reach herd immunity.

The most compassionate approach that balances the risks and benefits of reaching herd immunity, is to allow those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection, while better protecting those who are at highest risk. We call this Focused Protection.

What surge?
I am not believing these contrived numbers.
It is all fear propaganda and needs to stop.
This fear propaganda is being used to control the public when really blue state governors do not have the power to continue these “mandates.”

“Biden said he would lock down the country if the science dictated doing so”

OK, here are the facts: Strict lockdowns (like in France, what was done here was a joke) do reduce virus circulation to near zero, as long as they are carried out.

When strict lockdowns are relaxed, even a little, explosive transmission follows.

Strict lockdowns harm businesses, harm individuals, and harm children. The cost of strict lockdowns is very high.

In a political system where voting is allowed, strict lockdowns are not feasible for prolonged periods. France could only tolerate theirs for nine weeks. The US never locked down in the European sense.

BOTTOM LINE: Whether or not the cost of prolonged strict lockdowns is proportionate to the harms caused by widespread virus circulation is a political, not a scientific, question.

The virus will continue to spread until herd immunity is achieved, assuming no new useful advancements in vaccines. Elderly and ill need protecting but sooner we get this over with, the better. Go proactive

I’ve been on this protocol since April

https://www.evms.edu/media/evms_public/departments/internal_medicine/EVMS_Critical_Care_COVID-19_Protocol.pdf

Prophylaxis
While there is extremely limited data, the following “cocktail” may have a role in the prevention/ mitigation of COVID-19 disease. This cocktail is inexpensive, safe, and widely available. It should be noted that a recent publication suggests that melatonin my reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection, while many papers suggest that Vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of infection and is associated with a significantly worse outcome.
• Melatonin (slow release): Begin with 0.3mg and increase as tolerated to 2 mg at night
• Vitamin D3 1000-3000 u/day. Note RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) is 800-1000 u/day. The safe upper-dose daily limit is likely < 4000 u/day. Actually, I take 5000u
• Vitamin C 500 mg BID (twice daily) and Quercetin 250 mg daily Note that prolonged high dose quercetin has very rarely been associated with hypothyroidism. should be used with caution in patients with hypothyroidism and TSH levels should be monitored.
• Zinc 50-75 mg/day (elemental zinc). After 1 month, reduce the dose to 30-50 mg/day.
• Famotidine 20-40 mg/day

“But summer did not extinguish the virus.”

It certainly did not nor was the lock down intended to extinguish the virus. The original intent of the lock down was to make sure our medical facilities were not overwhelmed and they were not. It then turned politcal and was just to take down Trump.

The original plan was to let the virus burn through society and give us herd immunity and at the same time protect those at risk and insure our hospitals were not overwhelmed. Sweden did this, and did not destroy their economy. It worked in Sweden and will work anyplace. It was a good plan and it would have worked if it was not turned into a political fight for power.

The left does not care how many die so long as it gives them power. They are evil.

If in prior flu seasons people got tested for it and the numbers recorded.....I wonder what those graphs would have looked like. We didn’t do that before. I know around here schools sometimes closed down for a brief time during flu season because so many kids came down with it. We don’t know the numbers.

This is the first time we’ve done this....counting and reporting cases. So.... it seems like a pandemic.

I know someone who got it a week ago. Symptom was loss of smell. Scary shudder shudder. This is not the bubonic covid. I really doubt people got super mild cases of that plague.

My mask protects me; your mask protects you. If they hadn’t gotten everything backasswards from the beginning, all the hysteria would have been moot.

Old people die in greater numbers than young people; sick people die in greater numbers than healthy people. Describing pre-dabetic as “perfectly healthy” is not going to provide them immunity from “novel” infections — particularly when they are already dying in long term care centers and nursing homes.

Those getting infected the most, are not the same set of people dying the most. You can’t average out the disease and hope for any meaningful treatment. You have to directly address the problem — and not just report great success at treating healthy people.

The problem is that most of those dying are already dying in the long term care centers and nursing homes — and those infecting them are the caregivers. That population is not going to gyms to exercise. Those who are exercising, are doing so to build up their immunity to added loads — in whatever form. Obviously heavy breathing in an enclosed setting is very different than performing that same activity in an outdoors setting — which is a normally healthy activity — given that age group.

So when they confuse one thing with every other, and get everything backwards, of course “shit happens.” One wouldn’t expect anything else. That is the problem in understanding life — as well as death, rather than the thinking that it is enough just to live a long life.

From the 1944 movie Gaslight

Gregory: If I could only get inside that brain of yours and understand what makes you do these crazy, twisted things.

Paula: Gregory, are you trying to tell me I’m insane?

...

NYT: You’re fatigued. The ro is growing, coming for you. You must trust me or you will go insane. Trust me or you will die.

I'm more concerned with the mortality rate, not the infection rate.

The more people infected and surviving, the more herd immunity.
