CHICAGO When the coronavirus began sweeping around the globe this spring, people from Seattle to Rome to London canceled weddings and vacations, cut off visits with grandparents and hunkered down in their homes for what they thought would be a brief but essential period of isolation.
But summer did not extinguish the virus. And with fall has come another dangerous, uncontrolled surge of infections that in parts of the world is the worst of the pandemic so far.
The United States surpassed eight million known cases this past week, and reported more than 70,000 new infections on Friday, the most in a single day since July. Eighteen states added more new coronavirus infections during the seven-day stretch ending on Friday than in any other week of the pandemic.
In Europe, cases are rising and hospitalizations are up. Britain is imposing new restrictions, and France has placed cities on maximum alert, ordering many to close all bars, gyms and sports centers. Germany and Italy set records for the most new daily cases. And leaders in the Czech Republic described their health care system as in danger of collapsing, as hospitals are overwhelmed and more deaths are occurring than at any time in the pandemic.
The virus has taken different paths through these countries as leaders have tried to tamp down the spread with a range of restrictions. Shared, though, is a public weariness and a growing tendency to risk the dangers of the coronavirus, out of desire or necessity: With no end in sight, many people are flocking to bars, family parties, bowling alleys and sporting events much as they did before the virus hit, and others must return to school or work as communities seek to resuscitate economies.

Got to live our one and only life. Take off the masks and live your lives. Ps masks on kids? Child abuse.
Surges? Whatever. So, how come no N95s during the obiden pig flu issue?
With all the therapeutic advances, HCQ, Ivermectin, etc, why are some countries seeing more deaths are occurring than at any time in the pandemic?
I thought cases were growing but deaths coming down.
First, it has to be determined if what we’re being told is the truth or not.
I thought cases were growing but deaths coming down.
They are in the US. Fatalities are WAY DOWN here in the US as doctors become better at treating patients and people are now more likely to get tested if they come down with any possible symptoms.
A very large number of Americans remain asymptomatic and I still think eventually we will learn that a large portion of the country has some form of T-cell immunity to this coronavirus after prior exposure to other coronovirus ailments in years past.
There is very widespread disagreement over this “pandemic” among health professionals. That has not changed. The most draconian tend to be public health officials and the least tend to be doctors who have been on the front-line from the beginning.
Sweden had this right. Period. “Lock downs, social distance, and mask mandates” have done nothing to stop the spread in places that have had the most severe restrictions like Hawaii. Same for other nations who practiced the most severe restrictions. The virus does not care.
Surge is a subjective term but in any reasonable understanding of its meaning the NY Times is simply lying.
The NYSlimes took three morons to write this crap. The China Flu propaganda peddlers need to STFU.
“Pandemic Fatigue” = Finding out the truth. Some get sick, a few die, but shutting down the entire country for months was an extreme overreaction.

The Democrat cure is worse than the disease.
You are correct. The case mortality rate has been dropping since April. The daily death toll (as determined from the seven day moving average) is in fact decreasing.
I would argue that an increase in 'cases' without a corresponding increase in deaths is actually a positive development. It simply means that the overall mortality rate is decreasing.
We cannot hide behind symbolic masks from this or any virus. Dr. Sunetra Gupta of Oxford University seems to be one of few voices of reason on this.
We need to protect the vulnerable, and let the virus work its way through the rest of society in order to reach herd immunity.
The goal from the beginning (we were told) was "15 days to flatten the curve" in order to keep the hospitals from being overwhelmed.
That goal has long since been achieved. Now the goal line has been moved to where we must keep these freedom-killing restrictions in place until it can be guaranteed that 'no one ever gets this virus again', which is a scientific impossibility.
To quote from The Great Barrington Declaration (which is been censored by the leftist social media cabal):
Keeping these measures in place until a vaccine is available will cause irreparable damage, with the underprivileged disproportionately harmed.
Fortunately, our understanding of the virus is growing. We know that vulnerability to death from COVID-19 is more than a thousand-fold higher in the old and infirm than the young. Indeed, for children, COVID-19 is less dangerous than many other harms, including influenza.
As immunity builds in the population, the risk of infection to all including the vulnerable falls. We know that all populations will eventually reach herd immunity i.e. the point at which the rate of new infections is stable and that this can be assisted by (but is not dependent upon) a vaccine. Our goal should therefore be to minimize mortality and social harm until we reach herd immunity.
The most compassionate approach that balances the risks and benefits of reaching herd immunity, is to allow those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection, while better protecting those who are at highest risk. We call this Focused Protection.
Death rate virtually zero. Time to move on with life.
What a bunch of fear-mongering nonsense. The chronic liars at the nyt continue their abject derision of US Citizens. Don’t these losers realize that when you test so many, many will have been exposed to the virus, few will have any symptoms, very few will get “sick” and extremely few will die. What worthless, distorting, dishonest losers.
The Covid pandemic ceased being a pandemic in July. Fact.
Obama and Biden did the best possible thing they could for the Bird flue and Ebola- ignored it. People lived their lives, healthy people who got it recovered, unhealthy people had to struggle, but overall a lot fewer folks died and few folks didn't struggle (of course, there was enough to struggle about when Barky screwed up the economy).
My mom is 87.
She said “this is nonsense. Let me live my life. What’s left. If I die, I die. My individual health is not worth destroying the country”
Granted, she said it in Italian so a few words might be off :)
But that was essentially it.
She’s 87 and before the virus, would pick up 3 women in their 90s to go play cards 4 times a week at the senior center.
Those old Italian women last long.
The men? Not so much :)
I am proud of her.
