No, the increased political activism in professional sports doesn’t explain the ratings decline. Their conclusion seems to be sports fan just kinda “lost interest” for no reason at all. It just sort “happened”. Nothing to see here. Move along.
Peculiar article. After denying the obvious, they offer no explanation whatsoever for the drop in viewership.
“None of the above” ... pure wishful thinking/fantasy. It IS some of the above, for example .....
“The people who did say that they watched less sports were more likely to men (36 percent) than women (28 percent); more likely to be over 45 years old (36 percent) than under (26 percent); and far more likely to be Republicans. Among the latter group, 70 percent said they were more likely to watch less sports .....”
Another poll where people will be hesitant to tell some snooty pollster they are turned off by politics.
Ummmm yeah right.....burn the US Flag at the opening ceremonies...boost viewership even more....

That’s a terrible sample size. It may seem like a lot of people on it’s face but I do not believe you get an accurate representation of both hardcore and casual sports fans.
If this wasn’t a legitimate social phenomenon, then you wouldn’t be seeing the loses we have. At the very least, because of corona, you should have a statistically significant rise in the number of incidental viewers. So these sports like the NBA have lost (or not gained) incidental viewers along with losing casual sports fans.
You need a larger sample to be able to drill down on who left and why. These groups/demographics are very specific
In other words, this is a very watered down statistical analysis

Mistaken inference. The people who said “more likely” were probably watching anyway. Many of those who said “less likely” used to watch but do not any more. The 11% figure is, therefore, low. The question should have been, “Were you watching more or less because of the politics?” I can’t believe that these pollsters did not realize how misleading their results are.
What could it be?
I’m like totally baffled.

With millions of Americans under Democratic house arrest, tv sports should naturally be enjoying record- breaking high ratings. That the ratings are going down the toilet is easy to understand - Americans don’t like to be insulted by krap like multi- millionaire players dissing the patrons/viewers or our country for somehow being unfair. For what? Paying them such over- blown wages? They can GTH before I’ll watch them “kneeling” - F them all!
Why would Marist destroy its credibility like this? Makes zero sense.
Interesting thing - Gina Haspel’s degree was in journalism. Now she’s in charge of the CIA. I was trained in this, and there is so very little difference in terms of daily job between spy and journalist.
