'Unmasking' probe concludes without 'finding any substantive wrongdoing': report
The Hill ^ | 10 13 2020 | Olivia Beavers

The federal prosecutor Attorney General Bill Barr tapped to investigate whether Obama administration officials improperly requested the unmasking of individuals during the 2016 election has concluded his probe without “finding any substantive wrongdoing,” The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

Barr appointed U. S. Attorney Jeremy Bash to review whether there was wrongdoing by the Obama administration in requesting the identities of individuals — in particular Trump allies — whose names are redacted in intelligence reports during the heated election.

The practice, known as unmasking, is common and done to help government officials make sense of the intelligence documents they are reviewing, but the president and his allies have alleged that Obama-era officials acted improperly in making a series of unmasking requests that ultimately led to former Trump campaign aide Michael Flynn’s name to be unmasked.

According to the Post, Bash and his team reviewed unmasking practices as well as whether officials at the time improperly leaked information to reporters. Bash reportedly turned over his findings to Barr, whose office chose not to publicly release the findings. The findings did not rise to the allegations Trump and his allies have made about wrongdoing, according to the report.

For the good of the nation, we have to root out the coup
players and put them away for a long time.

Justice is very important. Denied, evil festers and gets
so much worse.

If we would have pounded the terrorists the first weeks of
the protests, this would have been over months ago.

After the election we need to take the gloves off in a number
of areas, and ACB may be the tipping point, us with a 6/3
majority.

I’m going to be putting some money on Trump over at
PredictIt dot com.

I made over a thousand bucks in 2016.

I’m going with faith he’ll pull it out.

The problem with that is that for many of those unmaskings, why does the USPERS need to be revealed? Why did their administration try to unmask way more USPERS than any previous?

Sure, there are various reasons to do so, but the purpose of the system is that they’re supposed to be pretty rare, not constant.

These were crimes of obtaining names of intelligence officials for political purposes.

Once again, we do not have the rule of law in this country.

I wouldn’t argue against your political take on this and related corruption issues. Leftists will reject any evidence no matter what, and “independents” who haven’t figured out what happened by now aren’t going to care.

But I’m one of those nuts who care about the truth for its own sake, and seeing the guilty get what they deserve. If Trump loses, there will be no justice served and the government will return to rigging our elections. Based on the last four years, if Trump wins, ditto. Once the election is over, interest will go to zero.

Yes you are right. I think Trump was willing to forgive and forget at the beginning of his term. Now that is not an option.

it reminds me of the scene in The Godfather where Michael says “I don’t care what Sollozzo says about a deal. He’s going to kill pop. That’s the key for him”

They have to keep trying to get rid of trump. That’s the key for them.

He is costing many people many many billions. And they are not happy.

Thanks for the tip on that website :-)

If Trump loses, or we lose the Senate there will be no justice served.

Hopefully we can keep the White House, add to the Senate and win back the House.

That’s been the key for a lot of these offenses. They are firing offenses, abuse of discretion, but not part of the criminal codes.

Conspiracy isn’t part of the criminal code? Now that they have had 4 years to scrub incriminating info we’ll never find evidence of that. Had their electronic devices seized in 2017 I have no doubt there would have been criminal activity uncovered.

Exactly! After the election the lawbreakers need to be held accountable and justice served.

If there were laws broken it would have been nice to have exposed it at least a year ago so the sentencing could have sent a message to anybody thinking about cheating during this coming election - at least lesson the fraud.

Who knows what the message they are getting now - no charges, no nothing yet anyways

Nixon didn't have the Patriot Act that allows for this type of action.

Was our side ever really expecting the unmaskings in and of themselves to constitute criminal behavior by the coup plotters? Maybe I missed it but I don’t remember any of our guys giving this report a big buildup. I’m thinking the real revelation RE the unmaskings happened several months ago, namely that Biden and several other high level types had requested Flynn be unmasked. This confirmed that the top tiers of the executive branch were involved with, or at least paying close attention to, the Flynn thing, but I don’t recall there being an expectation that it was in itself criminal. So this report just seems like a late breaking fizzle that was mostly expected.

A bit of a conflict of interest. It would be informative to know who recommended Bash to run the investigation.
