Antifas profile is rising so quickly that it even got name-checked at last weeks presidential debate.
As the movement enters the mainstream, its sympathizers are escalating the violence from throwing rocks and blocking doors to physical assaults and, for the first time, killing.
The rising level of violence from the group marks a sinister evolution from minor street crime to guerrilla tactics usually reserved for revolutionaries.
The fear is that we are witnessing the beginning of something that could be more violent over time, said Michael Kenney, a University of Pittsburgh professor who has interviewed Antifa sympathizers.
The November presidential election likely will be a seminal moment for the movement. Although its activists dont like President Trump, they share no love for his political rival, Democratic presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden, according to academics.
Indeed, Mr. Biden is too much of a centrist for their tastes.
They hate Biden and the Democratic Party, which they view as part of the problem, but they also dont see Biden as an existential threat to Americas pluralist democracy the way they see Trump, Mr. Kenney said.
The shadowy, loosely organized movement doesnt subscribe to any one political ideology but serves as an umbrella group for hard-left activists who aggressively oppose what they deem fascism and who advocate for positions that are often far left of the Democratic Party platform.

Is there a printer-friendly version of this article that I can read? The Times appears to have become an obnoxious adware farm.

When the left protests, they riot, loot, burn buildings, attack police and random strangers.
When the right protests, the left murders them.

If you will look at my first link, I already gave you one.
Well yeah, if the government refuses to admit they actually exist, I guess they are emboldened.
OK, thanks.
Why wouldn’t they be emboldened? They’ve been given multiple “get-out-of-jail-free” cards since May 31st when all this crap started.
Jay Danielson, here in Portland, shot in the back, was #1. Denver is murder #2. Rittenhouse in Kenosha would have been #2 if he had been a little slower.
The dynamics are shifting. After November 4, the Ball will Roll. The question is how many will Antifa, with police protection, like in Denver, (There were 20 popo within 50 feet, in broad daylight), be allowed to slaughter?
Biden says Antifa is an idea, not a movement. How can an idea commit violence? /s
“they also dont see Biden as an existential threat to Americas pluralist democracy the way they see Trump”
Antifa is not in favor of “pluralist democracy”. They are in favor of single party totalitarianism. Just ask them. If all dissent were quashed, that would be their perfect world.
After Antifa crushed us, they would kill each other.
_This_ is the “idea” that so impresses Joe Biden.
Antifa and its supporters are a disease which will be eradicated with extreme prejudice and violence! No mercy to traitors!
Hardly.
Their emboldened because they have media giving them the attention they desire. Just as BLm has the media feeding them to the public.
They got the taste for blood now and they like it.
Antifa and Burn, Loot, Murder are terrorist organizations. Their members and supporters are traitors and must be rounded up and sent to Gitmo.
First the Dems try to push “Antifa is actually only an idea”.
And now the violent, dangerous “idea” is emboldened.
Antifa was always a known and integral factor in the Left’s plans. Others are ony discovering that now.
Dems knew it long ago. Now they can make a fool like Biden look like Harry Truman compared to the Che and Fidel street rioter types.
Biden rallies.
Have been from the start.
