A federal appeals court on Saturday granted a temporary administrative stay, allowing Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's directive for one location per county for ballot drop boxes to remain in place for now.
The grant from the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit means the directive from Abbott, a Republican, will stand until the court has considered the state's motion for a stay on its merits.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton had filed an emergency motion Saturday for a stay pending appeal to block a district court order that would have allowed county officials to accept hand delivery of mail-in ballots at any county annex or satellite office. The motion seeks to require eligible voters to hand-deliver their ballots to a single early voting clerk's office to ensure ballot security, his office said in a release.
"The district court's order undermines our election security, disrupts the democratic process, and will only lead to voter confusion. It cannot stand," Paxton said in the news release. "Mail-in ballots are particularly vulnerable to fraud. Protections that ensure their security must be upheld and my office will continue to fight for safe, free and fair elections."

Early in Person voting starts this week here on the 13th.
They need to take those drop boxes out of every urban county.
“...Abbott, a Republican...”
The left off the part where Abott was appointed by Barack Obama....
Obama appointed a governor?
My understanding is that Texas law allows for one drop box per county. Do they expect the Governor to just say F the law? Finally, do these lazy ass Democrats ever do anything for themselves? They couldn’t figure out the butterfly ballot in 2000. They can’t figure out how to process in-person voters in under 2 hours. And they can’t lick a stamp and send in a ballot?
Why not? It's being done in California, New York, Michigan ... all over really. It's the new normal.
I could see as an alternative, posting guards 24 x 7 at the drop box locations to prevent the drop off of massive ballot dumps.
Ah, hell, I meant Pitman, the judge. Abbott is the GOP Gov’ner, of course.
You shall be forgiven THIS TIME. But you are now on double secret probation.
Just have video cameras on the box 24 seven and let them know youre videoing it
And have giant signs and red saying that every attempt at pride will be punishable by not more than 10 years in prison
I’ve tried to find a place where I could vote early but the referral just gives the Election Day places.
Assuming you live in an enemy occupied county like Harris, call the County Clerk's office on Tuesday and ask them where you can vote for Joe Biden today ....
A FReeper (sorry, I can’t give credit, but you know who you are)predicted the 5th would overturn. They were right.
There are already 4 cameras covering that location
I can see the rationale of having only one location for receiving ballots as ensuring control over a VERY critical government function. But can anyone else see a compromise in the converse? Im just trying to bolster my own argument.
Exactly. This seems to be forcing more mail-in ballots through the Dem union operated USPS? Also setting the state up for a possible lawsuit to delay their certification of electors?
That dont even have to work that hard. The ballot envelopes are postage paid.
Votes are counted on local levels. Are ballots not mailed in to the town level? I see no reason why every town hall can’t have a secure drop box by its front door.
Ballots sent in through the USPS are open to all kinds of shenanigans.
