NJ letter carrier arrested for allegedly discarding ballots, other mail

A Postal Service mail carrier in New Jersey was arrested Wednesday for allegedly discarding mail, including 99 general election ballots.

Nicholas Beauchene was charged with one count of delay, secretion, or detention of mail and one count of obstruction of mail. He faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the delay charge, and up to six months in prison and a $6,000 fine for obstruction.

The discarded ballots were addressed to residents of West Orange, N.J., U.S. Attorney Craig Carpentino said.

According to documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, approximately 1,875 pieces of mail were recovered from dumpsters in North Arlington and West Orange between Oct. 2 and Oct. 5. They were slated for delivery in Orange and West Orange.

Prosecutors allege that Beauchene was the only mail carrier assigned to deliver to those addresses. He is scheduled to appear Wednesday in Newark federal court.

Aside from the ballots, prosecutors said 627 pieces of first class mail, 873 pieces of standard class, two pieces of certified mail, and 276 campaign flyers for West Orange Town Council and Board of Education candidates were recovered.

It may not have been him. They arrested him because they determined that the mail would have been from his route.

However, I have seen postal trucks left unattended while the postman was walking part of the route. Someone could have grabbed a handful of mail including the ballots and put them in the trash.

On the second thread on this topic I challenged Freepers to figure out if these areas are predominantly Democrat or Republican.

I don't care. If someone is throwing away the mail - especially ballots - they need to take their lumps regardless of which party it hypothetically benefits.

It doesn’t matter, they’re will be wholesale slaughter of Republicans by fraud in November.

A purely Democrat NJ city already had a 20% fraud vote by mail election.

The American people are getting what they deserved.

Oh and in NJ legalizing Marijuana and other questions are on the BACK of the mail in ballot with nothing calling attention to it.

Well someone isn’t getting the transfer to Hawaii!

The most sought-after postal route of them all. The air is so dewy-sweet you don’t even have to lick the stamps.

All carriers and/or collectors learn on day one, Lock your truck when you leave it.

I know one fellow, (Tim,) who went inside a contract station to collect their mail. When he came out there was a fellow in his truck. Just before Tim was ready to smack the guy hard, the guy showed him his Postal Inspector Badge.

He was written up for not locking his truck.

A little follow up. Tim went on to eventually become a Post Master at a small West Michigan Post Office. Probably retired by now.

I would not have wanted HI. Too hot, and too many Commie's.

I did want to apply for an open Post Master position at Beaver Island, MI. I thought it was perfect. The whole Island was a hunting and fishing paradise.

There were only about 750 year around residents. Triple that in the summer tourist season.

My wife at that time vetoed strongly the idea because the nearest shopping was on the mainland which was only available by boat when the lake was ice free.

In hindsight, I should have taken the job, and dumped that wife. I did anyway a few years later.

The carrier is responsible for securing the mail in his/her possession therefore locking the mail truck while making his/her rounds is required.

I would imagine that if a legitimate incident had happened as you described, the postman would have noticed that entire addresses were missing from his route suddenly, and would have reported it as stolen mail to his branch. Even if he thought he might get in some trouble, he might be able to show that his vehicle was locked and broken into.

I used to have a post office box. I was in the post office at least two times a week. Twenty-plus years ago the postal clerks were dressed and presented well as professionals. I go now and they appear slovenly, with visible tats and piercings and with their uniforms in poor presentation. They also present more of an attitude, on average, rather than just handling the transactions. Along with that, being amazingly overweight has become common.

Having hired plenty of people over the years, I grew to believe there was a good correlation to how people dressed and looked and their professional competence. People who dress like and look like the average postal clerk today, I would have given a very fast look at their resume and turned them down. I don’t care if they do have the qualifications on paper. Call me prejudiced, but prejudice is another word for experience.
