"The mine closed in 2002 due to environmental restrictions and competition from Chinese suppliers" I think we may find that the Chinese were paying off environmental groups to shut down US competition. China has an advantage in that they don't have to pay any attention to any environmental effects of their mining.

Yep.... Lots of Chinese in US academics bottom to top.
About 30 years ago, I was living Houston and one of the things I had going on was as a specialist on a state of the art technology from my company that a very well known prof at a western US university was trialing in his research program. The profs work was funded by a prominent process equipment manufacturer that wanted to incorporate our technology into their overall system package. I was spending about 2-weeks a month in town split between the university and a second project at a copper mine and mill an hour drive away.
I was teamed up with a visiting Chinese prof that was on a fellowship to the project. The guy was really broken down, obvious hed had a hard life and was at an age that Im sure he had been caught up on the brutal side of the earlier Cultural Revolution chaos. So, we worked together several months then on my last visit he was gone and 2 well groomed Chinese with perfect English were in his place. I asked where the original Chinese was at. The reply was basically whos that, never heard of him. Very weird.

I know.
I live in a university town, work on occasion with Profs at the local university. So I see it all the time.

History is a cruel master. And it doesn’t help that it is hardly taught at all, and what there is, is so distorted that it could well be a parallel universe they are talking about.

EPA, warmists, environmentalists......can make it impossible to unearth those rare earth materials.
Partner, u ain't lying.
This is where President Trump can do wonders on the D.C. Swamp and curtail their activities. President Trump needs to be re-elected as our POTUS.
You are so correct that the Sierra Club and others are actively involved in basically keeping the U.S. from unearthing those rare earth materials.

China tried to corner the market some years back...it was why they were in Africa attempting to bankrupt African countries in exchange for loans to help build African infrastructure. Africans were so stupid they thought taking help from China was the same as taking help from the United States... we help to help. Chinese help to gain control. Commies are thugs... here and there and everywhere.
The Chicoms must have stolen the Technology to get these rare earth materials out of the ground. Simply amazing what the Chicoms are doing.
I think folks are getting mighty suspicious of the Chicoms since they virtually had nothing in the 1970's and now we have H. Bush, the Clintoons, W. Bush, and the Idiot Non American Piece of Work Obama gave the Chicoms everything they needed.

I do not know of any economic REO mines in Nevada or occurrences of any size...some REOs have been mined on a very small scale from pegmatite dikes in Elko county.
These occurrences are small with little potential for commercial development.
