(ATF) China has responded angrily to a US executive order to look into the country's dependence on rare earths from China. Reuters reported the order announced Wednesday could lead to tariffs, quotas or other possible import restrictions, according to the executive order released on Wednesday.
In China the news was met with irritation. Tencent news, for instance, said the US had entered a state of national emergency.
China does lead exports and has the top position in production of the group of elements that are is a vital material for the manufacture of technology products from mobile phones to military hardware.
In the tit-for-tat trade war, China is holding back exports or rare earths and the US, EU, Australia and others are re-opening old mines and exploring for new deposits. Rare earths are actually plentiful but difficult to get to Chinas are cheaper because they are more accessible.

First, in THIRTY YEARS.
100% supportive of Trump. It is so nice to have a President who is for America.
About darned time.
Prayers, for President and Mrs. Trump.
Love and support, to both of you.
Let China waste their money developing the infrastructure in Afghanistan to exploit their rare earth minerals.
We should harness the rare Earth minerals in Afghanistan.
They owe us.
I think they’re quite busy in Africa.
This monopoly of rare earths by China has to be met. It’s almost a blackmail item.

First in 40 years, actually—President Reagan.
China was already setting up shop even while our forces were still there in larger numbers.
I didn’t know that.
Thanks for the info.
Just out of curiosity, I started looking at the bottom of things that I buy. EVERYTHING SAYS MADE IN CHINA.
Reagan pissed off the same people Trump pisses off - but he often had too much faith that America’s government institutions would do the right thing without strict oversight. After Reagan they vowed “never again” - but Trump managed it, anyway.
Hence, Trump must not just be defeated, he must be destroyed.
Hello?
EXACTLY.
Exactly. I’d bet there are a crapload of minerals that we could exploit. Make the Taliban dig it out for us. They love to blow things up. Right?
Bing:
"The Mountain Pass Mine is an open-pit mine of rare-earth elements on the south flank of the Clark Mountain Range, just north of the unincorporated community of Mountain Pass, California, United States. The mine once supplied most of the world's rare-earth elements. Owned by MP Materials, it is the only rare earth mining and processing facility in the United States."
"The mine closed in 2002 due to environmental restrictions and competition from Chinese suppliers"
Unless I misremember, the US was the world’s largest source of rare earths until Bill Clinton forced the mine to close and converted it into a National Park or something where it could never be mined again - all for his paying Chinese and Indonesian buddies.
“Rare earths” are not rare. They are a commodity and more supply will come on line as prices are raised. China tried to corner the market by lowering prices to a level others cannot compete. It’s usually a doomed strategy. Ask the Hunt Brothers about their silver corner.
