If he didn’t steal it, does it matter?

He took advantage of something that most of us don’t like.

But I don’t see how that matters here.

Unless you are just angry at him for being against the nonsensical way this virus was handled.

I’m not opposed to vaccines, but this one is being rushed.

Never install the x.0 version of software.

Never buy a car in its first production year.

In other words: Never be on the bleeding edge of technology.

Be not the first by whom the new are tried,
Nor yet the last to lay the old aside. - Alexander Pope
is a prudent rule depending on your evaluation of the circumstances.
Desperate ills are by desperate measures cured. Or not at all. - Shakespeare
What it really boils down to is your estimate of the probability of harm from the virus compared to the probability of harm from the vaccine and the likelihood that the vaccine will prevent harm from the virus.

If you’re reasonably certain it’s safe, there’s little to recommend avoiding it if it is even 50% likely to prevent harm. If you’re certain it’s safe, it doesn’t take much expectation of benefit at all to make it acceptable.

If you’re old and in poor health, and if the virus is gonna be around indefinitely, you might as well take the vaccine, pretty much. IMHO.

“So, My tax deductions are NOT subsidies. They are tax breaks.”

You’re playing word games. They are one and the same. A government instituted “benefit”. Of course when it benefits you, it’s fine and you would all be in favor of making it bigger.

I have no problem with anyone taking “advantage” of whatever laws are in the books. Musk wasn’t the one who created those laws, and anybody else could have done the same thing. But Musk was the only one that did it by producing a beautiful successful product in high demand.

And with SpaceX he has accomplished what NASA, Boeing, Lockheed couldn’t - and at a much lower cost. He has single handedly breathed new life to our space program.

And think of all the jobs he has created.

We are lucky to have such a genius and a doer - a force of nature.

Stop being so envious, small minded and myopic and appreciate what he has done.

He’s right about the hysteria; but if the vaccine works and has no side effects, why not take it?

You're right.

But, no amount of investments in a stock is going to make that company successful, if the idea is generally any better than what is already in the market, like what GM and Ford and Chrysler and Toyota and other car companies are already doing, and those other car companies have much better car sales than Tesla.

Tesla car sales are always hyped up, but, the number of sales is miniscule when compared to any other car company.

Investing in a unproven idea is silly and foolish and not very smart. But, it's not my money, so, I wish them luck.

RE: You’re playing word games. They are one and the same. A government instituted “benefit”. Of course when it benefits you, it’s fine and you would all be in favor of making it bigger.

No I am NOT playing words games. THERE *IS* a difference between a tax break and government subsidies.

I have a million dollars, the government tells me that they won’t take more than X% of WHAT I ALREADY OWN. THAT is a tax break.

I have a million dollars. The government tells me that he will give me an additional million that I DON’T HAVE to start a business that they approve of. THAT is a subsidy taken from TAX PAYERS.

What is Tesla or some of Musk’s other battery companies and ventures? If he raised money from the private sector to build these companies because THERE IS A MARKET for these products and the investors see this and invest THEIR OWN MONEY, well and good, more power to him. Why? because if he fails, the investors lose money

If Musk’s companies were birthed as a result of GOVERNMENT MANDATES for green energy and tax payer money was given to him to start his companies, I don’t support it. If he fails, tax payers lose, not him.

RE: Stop being so envious, small minded and myopic and appreciate what he has done

1) I am not envious and you should not be equating asking a VALID business question to envy.

2) I will appreciate what he has done IF he did what he did with NO tax payer money given to him to start his business, and it can all because investors see a market for it.

THAT is what I ask my question.

how much of Musk’s wealth comes from government mandates and subsidies?

You could ask the same thing of Trump. Why do you think he has tax attorneys on his payroll? You think he files short form?

Did he get money from Uncle Sam or from any of the state government to build his hotels and buildings? if so, those are government SUBSIDIES from TAX dollars.

If he developed those properties based on money from investors or bank loans (which he has to repay ), then they are NOT government subsidies.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Elon Musk is smart enough to take supplements in form of vitamins etc.such as NAC, ascorbic acid, zinc and vitamin D in order to make himself more resistant to such viruses, of course along with a healthy life style, not being overweight for one. A regiment of such vitamins or supplement will not make you impervious but if you should catch such a virus, its impact may be minimal. On the other hand this virus is nothing to sneer at, as at times it may barely phase a person while it may knock another person for a loop. And as far as some of these quick developed vaccines is concerned I for one would wait a while to see how they work out and in the mean time stick to the above recommended regime or take BHT which will kill most lipid covered viruses of which the covid-19 virus is one of them.

ALL of the quickie COVID “vaccines” inject a live, synthetic virus programmed to invade the cells in our body ... every last one of them!

None of the current quickie COVID vaccines are really vaccines in the traditional sense of a vaccine that injects target virus fragments (antigens) that the body reacts to by making protective antibodies.

Instead, what these quickie “vaccines” really are is a giant gene therapy experiment to be conducted simultaneously on billions of people. Instead of the actual target virus fragments (antigens), what will be injected is a live, laboratory-made synthetic virus/plasmid that contains spliced-in DNA/RNA of COVID target virus fragments (antigens) so that your own body will manufacture the target virus fragments (antigens) itself when the synthetic virus/plasmid enters your cells and hijacks their protein-production machinery, with the body subsequently producing the protective COVID antibodies to the self-made COVID target virus fragments (antigens).

Heretofore, such recombinant DNA/RNA techniques first mixes the synthetic virus/plasmid into a bioreactor containing living cells where the synthetic virus/plasmid invades the cells, multiplies, hijacks the cell machinery, and produces the target virus fragments (antigens) encoded in the synthetic virus/plasmid. The manufactured target virus fragments (antigens) are then extracted and purified. These virus fragments (antigens) in turn are the only active ingredient in the vaccine when it’s injected into people being vaccinated. Subsequently, the body produces protective antibodies to develop immunity to the injected virus fragments (antigens). The Flublok influenza vaccine is manufactured this way, for example (see below).

However, the “new” gene therapy technology directly injects the synthetic virus/plasmid directly into people being “vaccinated”, skipping the bioreactor, target virus fragment reproduction, extraction, and purification steps, and instead uses the human body directly as the “bioreactor”. This is a technique heretofore never tried before, yet the plans are to try this on billions of people all at once. This gene therapy “vaccine” technology is not even really a new technology at all because it’s been around for a while, but big pharma knew that they could never get away with such gene therapy experimentation on billions of people UNTIL COVID came along and the FDA could eliminate the bulk of their previous vaccine safety requirements because COVID emergency. One of the drawbacks of some of these quick developed vaccines is that they may work like a charm for the specific virus they are designed for, but later on should you catch a mutated form of such a virus, and viruses will mutate, it may throw you for a loop.

I for one am not too anxious to participate in this experiment ...I think I’ll wait a while and see how millions of other people react first ...

“If he fails, tax payers lose, not him.”

Absolutely not! Whatever direct subsidies Musk received was repaid with interest a long time ago.

And other companies have received even bigger subsidies without paying them back.

https://cleantechnica.com/2020/08/03/tesla-subsidies-how-much/

I take it the real reason you don’t like Musk is probably because of his personality and/or an antipathy toward electric cars. Am I close? (Be honest. :))

He is brilliant a “rigging” the system.

“Musk said sweeping restrictions on movement and business enacted due to the coronavirus had “diminished” his “faith in humanity.” The entrepreneur said that instead of sweeping lockdowns, governments should focus on isolating those most at risk while allowing the rest of society to continue with normal life.”

Can’t disagree with him.

LOL,

This is the first “virus” that has become political. Like everything government touches and briefs as a success, government took bad and made it worse: war on drugs, education, health care...

Musk is 100% spot on.

We should have sheltered those at risk.

With no vaccine in hand (where slowing things down would make sense), all we did was create a prolonged and multiple wave path to the same end and where those at risk are at GREATER risk of contracting it (more interactions and time). A certain percent of people (~43% based on what they know now) will get this virus and that number will not change if we shut down, wear masks, gloves, or a tin foil hat. In fact that number will not change if we decide to go to the disco or a crowded bar and dance the Lambada. What will change in the equation is “who” gets it, but in the end, a certain percentage needs exposed for the channels of transmission to be closed, i.e. herd immunity.

Musk is right, it’s only the “who” that we have some control over long term, and by sheltering those at risk, we should have and could have minimized some of the deaths. But instead government geniuses like Cuomo in New York gave the order for Covid positive patients to be accepted back into nursing homes early on, but then likes to talk about “science” and how he defers to the “experts” in all his decisions. What a joke.

If a Mafioso says to me : Build your business in the area I control and I won’t demand more money from you, did he GIVE me money, or did he tell me that he won’t take MORE of my money?
