In the first presidential debate between President Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden, voters who watched Tuesday night say Biden won the debate, but those who watched the heated exchanges overwhelmingly called the debate's tone negative, and most said they felt annoyed watching it.
Forty-eight percent say Biden won, while 41% think Trump was the winner. Biden's margin here is not too different than his lead in national polls. Ten percent called the debate a tie.
Immediately after the debate, the CBS News Battleground Tracker interviewed likely voters nationwide who watched the debate in order to get their reaction.
More than eight in 10 voters who watched describe the debate's tone as negative, including majorities of each candidate's supporters.

Given that's there's no way of checking the crosstabs on this poll, it's hard to ascertain its accuracy. But if you read the linked story, here's (IMHO) the gist of the story...
"On balance, more debate watchers said their opinion of Biden improved than said that about Mr. Trump. Three in four Democrats said the debate gave them a better impression of Biden, while Republicans were a bit more divided about their candidate. Fifty-two percent of Republicans said the debate made them feel better about Mr. Trump; 42% said their view of him had not changed."
In short, Biden clearly wins debate and improves standing among likely voters.
That's how it looks like they'll spin it.
Comments or opinions - anyone?
Dog-faced pony soldier is an idea. A good idea or a bad idea coming from an individuals brain in government. Cmon man...government is an idea.
Individuals vs. collectives on full display.
Civilization is the progress toward a society of privacy. The savages whole existence is public, ruled by the laws of his tribe. Civilization is the process of setting man free from men.
Ayn Rand
Life, faculties, production in other words, individuality, liberty, property this is man. And in spite of the cunning of artful political leaders, these three gifts from God precede all human legislation, and are superior to it. Life, liberty, and property do not exist because men have made laws. On the contrary, it was the fact that life, liberty, and property existed beforehand that caused men to make laws in the first place.
What Is Law?
What, then, is law? It is the collective organization of the individual right to lawful defense.
Frederic Bastiat
Is it a good law or a bad law?...a good government or a bad government?...a good individual or a bad individual?...a good collective or a bad collective?...a good idea or a bad idea?
A Donald Trump or a Joe Biden. Theyre just individuals...with faces, words and deeds.
CBS was one of few, maybe only, ones to say biden was ahead in this. In fact, it was almost immediately released. I think they had their poll candidates lined up, and knowing CBS we know who they likely were.
As expected.
This debate, the media, as expected.
The people will elect Trump and the swamp tries to steal.
It didn’t appear that Trump had prepared. It really looked like he was winging it.
Biden definitely got under Trump’s skin.
I was yelling at the TV obvious answers that should have closed down Biden. AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Biden was lying his ass off, but the Democrats all believe the same hoaxes.
Wallace was not in control of much of the facts and even repeated the good people hoax as if true. He did not call out Biden on any of his lies.
Of course See BS is going to say that.
Debates may get better as they did in 2016. (Trump really got the momentum against Hillary in debate #2) but the stakes are so much higher right now due to pandemic and early / mail-in ballot voting. Im not so sure as many people will tune in to all 3.
In an ideal world. Trump would have hit it out of the park right away and left Biden zero room to keep or gain new ground...But alas. The President is human. And honestly not a rehearsed politician. And the moderator was biased etc...
I believe that save for a miracle and an October surprise, akin to the last minute Hillary email/Comey/FBI debacle basically an unforeseen yet consequential event or circumstance arising...here or anywhere in the world really ... Save for that this election could go either way because the mail-in ballot ridiculousness leaves plenty of room for rigging up a Biden victory.
What do I say? Pray up and repent of sins.
“Biden clearly wins debate and improves standing among likely voters.”
Your article states that Trump won the debate among independents, so your conclusion is BS.
See BS wrote this story two days ago.
Just my 2 cents after watching the debate unfold.
Wallace tied with Trump
Trump did mention the coup and Joe’s role in it. Biden denied everything. I would love to see some declassified documents this week.
I think the winner was Chris Wallace, for not losing his temper and screaming at them.
What a dumpster! Trump totally screwed the pooch in acting the way he did: he had the facts on his side, but he acted like an ass. Then there was Biden, the Empathy Devil, with his derisive laughter and his empty kitchen chair remarks. He definitely wasn’t sundowning last night.
Trump, to his credit, got the Empathy Devil to separate himself from the hard left, somewhat. So it’s possible that the Empathy Devil somewhat alienated part of his base. I still fear, however, that Trump’s behavior just guaranteed us at least 4 years of Communism.
My comment is this is almost exactly the same results the MSM reported after Trump’s debates with Hillary. If anything, these results are a bit better for Trump than those were.
That seemed to work out OK for him.
She won the debate polls.
Trump won the election.
Most annoying was Biden’s continual interruptions of the Trump-Wallace debate.
Wallace should have just shut down Biden: “Mr Vice President, please! Donald Trump and I are having a debate here!”
And I now know more about Chris Wallace’s positions on the issues than I do Joe Biden’s. Good job, Chris Wallace!
Pundits see one thing. Regular voters see another. Kids see nothing.
I heard Biden lie his ass off and throw the Democratic platform under the bus.
True. But Trump may have gotten under Biden’s skin as well.
“Will you shut up, man!”
Agreed.
Trump’s voters are fired up and are going to vote for him regardless. We know he can be a jerk. We either don’t care, or we love him for it.
Biden’s voters, especially the Independents he is counting on are much less excited. Did they see anything from him last night that would get them pumped up?
Absolutely not. What they did see was a tired old man who was just as big a jerk as Trump was.
The fact that Independents actually favored Trump in the debate last night is the huge takeaway from this poll.
I agree with you, I felt like DJT left a lot of good answers in his pocket and didn’t use them. I felt that plugs won that round. I also felt that it didn’t help that Wallace had his hand on the scale with the way he went after Donald for the interruptions but not plugs. And the question about Donald’s taxes, how was that a debate question? And going after the pres about the “right wing” people rioting? I mean, COME ON MAN, they are causing this rioting? What news does Chris watch? Lastly (for now) that plugs said antifa was not an organization and Wallace didn’t allow Donald to correct him. I mean, come on man???
I felt like if you were going to vote for plugs you’ll still vote for him. If you were going to vote for Donald you will still vote for him. If you were among the undecided and waiting to see the outcome of that debate to figure out who you were going to vote for, I’d say you might now be leaning toward plugs. Was not helpful and moderator sucked.
