Baby Boomers are going to vote themselves social benefits until there is nothing left to spend. Then, they will exit the world and leave the next generations the bills.

Sorry but you are putting the blame for the social programs on the wrong shoulders.

It was the "Greatest Generation" and their parents who did all that.

The first Baby Boomer did not get to vote until 1966. The first presidential elections they voted in Richard Nixon.

All the big social benifits were voted in by that time.

The Boomers paid for it and paid for it and now are being told that as the last ones are coming up on retirement that the money is all gone.

For a debt to exist, a receivable must exist.

So we may be leaving the millennials $80 trillion in debt, but we are also leaving the millennials $80 trillion in receivables.

The bigger question is what kind of world are we leaving the millennials.

• Will God still be recognized and honored.
• Will life still be considered sacred?
• Will rule of law persevere?
• Will hard work still be rewarded?
• Will property rights still be respected?
• Will people be excellent to each other?
• Will you still be able to make a decent living?
• Will old people and disabled be treated with dignity?

But I guess you're not asking the big question. You're asking the more immediate question about the debt and what it means.

• Is the ownership of the debt and receivables so lopsided that we are enslaving a generation to a few receivable owners?
• Will foreigners own the receivables? making our country a debtor nation?
• Is there a reasonable solution to that imbalance, that can be chosen within a capitalistic framework?
• Or will society choose socialism or communism or dictatorship, to try to remedy the imbalance, even though those systems result in worse imbalances?

I believe it can be resolved within a capitalist market economy.

• That is, If the economy isn't siphoning labor off to socialist countries, I believe that labor economics will result in wages that result in reasonable real wages in excess of taxes.
• And if it doesn't, you can still resort to artificial means of raising wages such as minimum wage or unionization to achieve reasonable wages. I wouldn't resort to those methods unless labor economics just doesn't result in a reasonable wage over a long period of time. Free Market economies tend to be very efficient at solving these issues.
• If consumers aren't making enough to buy, then the economy stops. So it's in almost everyone's interest to make sure wages are adequate. I believe this will work itself out, no socialism needed. Except for safety nets like bankruptcy and unemployment.

  Bottom line:

• Markets are very efficient at solving issues like this.
• But we do need to put our financial house in order, because the way forward is uncertain. And the less uncertainty we can leave to the next generation the better.
• As a friend's mom was told her, "What can they do? They can't eat you."

The novel A Clockwork Orange was written by Anthony Burgess, a World War II veteran (born 1917)...not a boomer. I read the novel when I was in high school. I have never had any desire to see the movie and don't know how faithful it is to the novel.

Here’s something to consider:
You know what’s amazing about the USA and boomers? In the last 60 years, Boomers have taken on the debt of WW2, SoK, Vietnam, rebuilding Europe and Asia, eating sand in the Middle East, walking on the Moon and developing a technological society the likes of which the world has never seen. How did we do it? We produced unique things. And people wanted those things. And we (boomers) still have enough wealth to spend like drunken sailors on our bucket list.

By the time we boomers die, some of us will have built wealth. That wealth goes to end of life care, things that make our not-so-mobile lives easier, bucket lists while we can still walk, a charity that benefits many people or animals, and our ungrateful children.

In America anything is possible. Invent something. Write something. Create something. Re-create yourself. It’s what Americans have done for 400 years. Why should that change now? Have you seen the wage bracket for robotic engineers? (I know, I keep pushing that.)

Beijing is lit up like a christmas tree 24/7 - like America, they’re producing for a world where 70% of the population is just beginning to afford a 60” flat screen tv. That’s a huge pool of spenders who are going to want more things. The smartest thing millies can do is not figure out how to ‘detach’ by living in a tent in the woods, cooking over a wood fire and eating squirrels ala middle ages. It is to realize the world is their oyster and to put away childhood fantasies and go get some instead of being negative about the future because mom and dad aren’t rich enough, or they grew up an only child or an orphan or without a dog, or life sucks, or some other nonsensical mental block to success.
