Laboratory tests of surgical and N95 masks by researchers at the University of California, Davis, show that they do cut down the amount of aerosolized particles emitted during breathing, talking and coughing. Tests of homemade cloth face coverings, however, show that the fabric itself releases a large amount of fibers into the air, underscoring the importance of washing them. The work is published today (Sept. 24) in Scientific Reports.

Without a mask, talking (reading a passage of text) gave off about 10 times more particles than simple breathing. Forced coughing produced a variable amount of particles. One of the volunteers in the study was a superemitter who consistently produced nearly 100 times as many particles as the others when coughing.
In all the test scenarios, surgical and N95 masks blocked as much as 90 percent of particles, compared to not wearing a mask. Face coverings also reduced airborne particles from the superemitter.
Homemade cotton masks actually produced more particles than not wearing a mask. These appeared to be tiny fibers released from the fabric. Because the cotton masks produced particles themselves, it's difficult to tell if they also blocked exhaled particles. They did seem to at least reduce the number of larger particles.

Say it, don't spray it.
Can we Sue these people that make us wear these masks when all the Eye Nose Throat and Lung problems start ?
Masks like Fauci likes to wear don't work.
And the lint into your lungs.
True, and both go right around and through any mask that isn’t sealed to the face. It’s science.
So if the are worn correctly the masks decrease the aerosolized particles released. Does this reduce the spread of infection or is whats left more than adequate to spread it. What about the masks worn incorrectly. Did they test masks after 20 minutes of use or longer? How about masks worn over and over again? Ill ef the results are very different
Fortunately my beard is antiviral, so I and everyone else are completely safe. < /s>
So this study couldn’t distinguish between particles and droplets?
Deadly cotton fibers.
Obama/Biden Just in time supply chain almost destroyed us.
See Battelles machines are capable of cleaning 80,000 M-95 masks per day, and Ohio has two of these machines, located in Columbus and Beavercreek. USA innovation !!!
Im waiting for all the opportunistic infections caused by wearing something over your face all day long.... My second grader came home lasater week with a snotty head cold despite social distancing, masks and UV lights in the classroom...... since the common cold is a virus very similar to covid we all know how well all these theatrics work
Everyone seems to miss the most important point: that someone who doesn’t have the coronavirus, which is most people, isn’t going to get anyone sick, regardless of who does or doesn’t wear a damned mask. This whole hysteria is just unbelievable.
There are masks that they do not go through but they are around $400, you have to change the filters regularly and the suit you have to wear with them costs mucho buckos.
Mask will help, not stop but help, with bacteria. Viruses are a whole different kettle of fish.
And the lint into your lungs.
N95 masks stop viruses like screen doors on submarines stop water.
Well I suppose someone needed to research this scientifically.
But some things are just self evident. Everyone has always known to stay away from people with viral infections like the flu or covid. Trouble is, sometimes these are asymptomatic or presymptomatic.
If you have a transmissible virus wearing the mask probably does help, to some degree, prevent spittle from spraying onto others.
But as the article alludes, there are 2nd order effects to consider. If you keep wearing the same mask, unwashed for days on end, you will touch it many times and then you will get your fingers onto other surfaces and other people. There seems to be scant evidence that wearing a mask stops you from catching a virus, as there is showing it may prevent someone from spreading it.
If someone with covid spittles on your mask, you may not breathe it in. Though, who has tested the molecule size and what types of masks filter down to the appropriate nanoparticle size etc? And then, assuming they didn’t get it in your eyes, it’s still on the surface of your mask... for how long, how many times you touch it, how long does it last on surfaces... all open questions in my book.
Wash and/or change out your masks. Sanitize your hands. Wash your hands a lot with soap and hot water for 20 seconds. The media loves to harp on the “wear a mask” part of it, but skimp out on the rest especially the part about changing and cleaning masks. People all over just keep the same mask in their car, wear it when they exit the car, take it off when they drive, and never clean it for weeks.
I read that 95 masks do help prevent the inhalation of the virus, but due to their design they do little to stop the exhalation of the virus. That may be outdated info. I also read that tests show some 90% of the recent “95 masks” imported from China are defective...
