The Legal Marijuana Now Partys candidate in the race for the Second Congressional District has died, prompting a special election in February.
Adam Charles Weeks died earlier this week, said Kevin OConnor, the partys candidate for U.S. Senate. Its a sad and sudden thing. We are pretty much taken aback, he said.
Weeks was facing off with Democratic U.S. Rep. Angie Craig and Republican candidate Tyler Kistner to represent the district. That election will now be postponed.
The law is clear on what happens next, Secretary of State Steve Simon said in a statement Thursday. If a major party nominee dies within 79 days of Election Day; a special election will be held for that office on the second Tuesday of February (February 9, 2021).
In 2013, the Minnesota Legislature changed the state election law to delay elections rather than repeating the rushed outcome that followed the death of Sen. Paul Wellstone.

Thank you for the info.
All our representatives are elected in districts with about a million people in each district. Only those million vote for their rep.
I looked it up. The druggie got 5 percent which is eligible for being on the ballot. Then state law says if a person dies within 79 days of the election, the new election is held the second Tuesday of February.

I still don’t think the druggie would qualify as a major party candidate, and I don’t think state law can trump federal law.
Regardless, I still think it’s going to court.
There is no federal law defining parties as major or minor. States make that definition and run elections
Yes, most charitable guess is addiction to pain pills following the ski accident.
Article I, Section 4:
The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing Senators.
2 U.S.C. 7:
The Tuesday next after the 1st Monday in November, in every even numbered year, is established as the day for the election, in each of the States and Territories of the United States, of Representatives and Delegates to the Congress commencing on the 3d day of January next thereafter.
Thanks for the info.
It seems the election will take place but the results won’t count. WTF.
Silly law passed after Wellstone died and Mondale couldn’t get his 11K absentee votes. Total BS, especially since it involves a minor party candidate. Let there be a special election if the dead weed guy wins lol. Letting the votes transfer to the new candidate is also fine with me for this rare circumstance. Florida did that when that fag Foley withdrew, his name stayed on the ballot but the votes went toward the new nominee (who lost, sadly).
This happened in the UK in 2010, delayed the vote for a safe seat. Silly.
That said, this could be good for us, a low turnout election in Feb for a seat that is 50/50 at best in November. If we win though you hate to give the dyke bitch another chance. Whoever wins in November will take this crap to Federal court.
Seat will be vacant for EC and new Speaker vote.
Good. Safe D right now
Cook has it as Lean Dem for ‘20.
I guess his “medicine” didn’t save him.
I WTFed when I saw “inside elections” rated it safe rat. Cook and Politico have it lean. Inside elections can lick the inside of my butt.
