Trump implements new travel restrictions to Cuba, bans purchase of rum and tobacco

President Trump announced new restrictions for American travelers going to Cuba, barring them from purchasing rum and tobacco or staying in Cuban government-funded hotels.

The Treasury Department announced regulatory changes under the new rules that restrict importing Cuba-origin alcohol and tobacco products and prevent travelers from attending or organizing certain professional meetings or conferences in Cuba, as well as public performances, clinics, workshops, competitions, and other exhibitions in the country.

Trump also applied new sanctions against Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua as part of an ongoing crackdown against communism.

OTOH, I bought a bottle of Cuban rum while in the Caymans. Did not care for the taste.

Very different flavor than Meyer's and a few others. Much more pronounced. Will not drink Bacardi, so cannot compare.

If straight, still prefer tequila.

That used to be true many years ago, but now that all the big German companies are putting up new factories in the former German Democratic Republic....

Trump just won Florida.

Not so sure about that as I once was.

I read a while back that many of the grandchildren and great-grand children of the Cuban refugees are pretty far Left.

Why does not Haiti produce cigars?

There is no reason that they can’t produce excellent cigar other than they are governed by a corrupt socialist government.

You can get often better than Habana quality cigars from the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica.

I smoke a _lot_ of cigars of all kinds, and I must respectfully disagree.

The Cubans use primitive technology, treat their workers horribly, use medieval management techniques, have significant quality control issues, have a lot of their product faked (even in Cuba, and especially in the Caribbean).

But--they have one thing going for them that all the f*&^-ups in the world and a horrible government has not managed to destroy.

It is the soil.

A properly aged quality Cuban is a different world than other cigars.

It is what it is.

My BFF’s cousin and his wife and kids went to Cuba a few years ago for vacation and loved it.

Go figure.

But finding an authentic, quality Habana cigar is increasingly a major issue. No wonder why a lot of the quality cigars are now coming from the Dominican Republic and Central America.

“That used to be true many years ago, but now that all the big German companies are putting up new factories in the former German Democratic Republic.”

From everything I’ve seen, it’s still pretty hard hit now and is considered a tad “second class”:

Communist governments won’t allow you to build anything, export anything-whatever products/tourists do get to Cuba the government seizes all the profits-and keeps them. And people would be imprisoned for reading banned books, just like they always have-better to do what pres Trump has done-take away all the US dollars from Cuba so the people will get REALLY pissed off at the govt-the only way capitalism will return to Cuba will be for the Cuban people to totally remove the communist government, period...

He should have made an exception for the Entertainment Industry folks to Travel to Cuba for any Reason, and in a footnote buried somewhere, a clause that they may NEVER RETURN.

No one is going there anyway - it stinks as a vacation destination.

I hear Vietnam is nicer.

At least the Vietnamese feel bad about about kicking us out. They look towards Tokyo and Seoul and imagine what could've been if they let us stay.

We should end the embargo, and flood Cuba with capitalism.

Are you promoting a military invasion?

There should be Wal-Marts and McDonald’s everywhere in Cuba. And there should be book stores selling books that are critical of Cuba.

You must be because that is the only way all of that happens.

Why does not Haiti produce cigars?

I have read that political instability, corrupt government institutions and poor infrastructure hamper tobacco farming in Haiti. Nonetheless, Barbancourt rum from Haiti is among the world's best rums.

Not the soil, the aging process.

There is no way to speed up the soaking.

It depends on where in the former GDR. Leipzig is booming because both Volkswagen and BMW have set up major production facilities there, along with a booming reconstruction of the historic old town.

I have worked with Canadians, eh!, for years, and for some reason they love going to Cuba. Although, had several tell me after a trip to Habana, they would never go back...said the place was the TWSH, (Third World Shit Hole), and hated it.

One gal told me that they were on a planned tour from their hotel and they were shuttled through the Che Guevara museum where they were forced to listen to a lecture on what a wonderful revolutionary Che was.

What a load of crap!! Only goofy Canadians would put up with this.
