Van Morrison is releasing a series of protest songs opposing Great Britain's coronavirus lockdowns, saying "people should have the right to think for themselves."
"Im not telling people what to do or think, the government is doing a great job of that already," the 75-year-old Northern Irish singer said in a statement posted on his website on Friday. "It's about freedom of choice."
The trio of songs, called "Born to be Free," "As I Walked Out" and "No More Lockdown," all "question the measures the government has put in place," an announcement about them said. "Morrison makes it clear in his new songs how unhappy he is with the way the government has taken away personal freedoms."

Van Morrison has described the British government as fascist bullies disturbing our peace in one of three new tracks he has written to protest against safety measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
On No More Lockdown, Morrison sings:
No more lockdown / No more government overreach / No more fascist bullies / Disturbing our peace No more taking of our freedom / And our God-given rights / Pretending its for our safety / When its really to enslave
The song also condemns celebrities telling us what were supposed to feel, although the 75-year-old Northern Irish songwriter denied doing this himself.
Im not telling people what to do or think, he said in a statement. The government is doing a great job of that already. Its about freedom of choice. I believe people should have the right to think for themselves.

William Barr called the lockdown orders the greatest intrusion on civil liberties in American History since slavery. 9/16/2020
What a marvelous night for protest songs.
I’m on the same wavelength.
Brown eyed girl is proud!
As Ive been saying: WHAT WOULD ZAPPA DO?
I just cant imagine these lockdowns happening back in my day. Glad to see some of my generation still around making music and speaking out about the madness.
I must say as a Zappa fan, he just had a knee-jerk hatred of anything Republican. It goes back to his feelings about McCarthy, I think that’s what tainted his opinion on all things Republican.
Glad to hear it! Im going to have to go and search online to see if I can find at least a snippet of those songs.
Sounds like a Wild Night!
Exactly! The Woo flu! The China flu! The Hong Kong flu a flu! The panda flu!
The funny thing about these stupid liberal governments in Europe if they dont even have an election
Good for him. I hope more follow suit.
BTW, slightly off topic but has anyone noticed that no music of any significance has come out of these troubled times? The social upheavals of the ‘60s inspired some great music but this time around it’s crickets. You’d think that by now we’d have at least a few iconic songs about life with COVID or the cities burning or statues coming down or even just Trump Bad—but nope, or at least not that I’m aware of. Not sure what it means exactly but the lack of musical reflection seems significant. It’s like the current artists either aren’t inspired or simply aren’t up to the task of crafting a musical response to the times.
I am definitely Ok with leftists viewing the lockdown as a disaster.
Leonid and Friends has released several excellent new covers during COVID from Chicago, Blood Sweat And Tears and some others.
Well, I think Cardi B is a perfect encapsulation of the culture that is trying to seize power. :)
Good for Van the man!
He has done a lot of great songs, but that’s my favorite.
That’s what Jackie Wilson said.
Wild nights are calling!
