ALBANY — Gov. Andrew Cuomo walked back threats from last week that he would raise taxes on the state’s wealthiest should Washington fail to grant additional federal aid to state and local governments hit hard by COVID-19.

“If Washington does not step up to the plate here and get us financial aid, we are going to be in a whole world of hurt for a long time. This state, between the state and the local governments we need about $50 billion,” the governor said Tuesday during an interview with Long Island Radio.

New York budget officials have estimated a high of $59 billion is needed over the next two years to close the state and local governments’ budget deficits, as well as those of the MTA and the Port Authority.

What’s with this “financial aid” terminology? He doesn’t call it a bailout?

The impression I get, is that it seems to be Democratic states and cities which are asking Washington DC for a bailout. There’s some irony here, in that, Democratic places have been the slowest to reopen their economies, which in turn increases their financial burdens, as taxes from economic activity in their states just aren’t being paid right now.

If they would reopen their economies, their alleged need for a bailout wouldn’t be there anymore.

I think their game plan is, complain they need a bailout, hope that Biden wins and Democrats control congress, and that the new Congress will pass trillions of dollars in “financial aid” for Democratic states and cities.

Here’s an idea Governor...

Allow fracking in New York state. The oil/gas companies will gladly pay taxes and license fees.

New York State gets moneys.

Winning.

He’s spent years dissing Trump, dissing the Feds, but is now basically begging for billions from those he’s publicly thrown mud at. What a two faced low life.

Start with an across the board payroll cut for all non essential government employees. (BMV, DOT etc) Elected officials cuts start at 25%. For the common good of course

So, citizens who elect financially responsible govts in their States that maintain balanced budgets are supposed to be on the hook for the incompetent profligate fools in New York. Is that correct, Cuomo, you freakish prick?

Of course, that’s exactly what they’re hoping. If Harris...er, I mean Biden wins, they get to stick their grubby hands right back into the federal cookie jar.

Too late, with the collapse of oil prices due to Covid, nobody is drilling anywhere.

However, if he didn't ban it in the 1st place, they would have drilled there and he would have a nice rainy day fund right now (assuming he didn't spend it on more crap for Illegal Aliens and such, and that's a big assumption)

Too bad. Maybe you shouldn’t have ruled you state with a iron first and allowed “non-essential” business to remain open.

Their state employee retirement system is unfunded due to years of mismanagement and horrible fiscal policy. This is their chance to reset that with other states’ money.

“cut the pay by 40% for the majority of Public Employee’s, excluding Police and Fire Only!!”

I work for the state. Believe it or not, I don’t get rich and I don’t have a golden retirement. I don’t get free health insurance either. The pay is actually no better than the equivalent private sector jobs.

You cut our pay by 40% all I can say is good luck keeping the prisoners in the prisons. Qualified and knowledgeable people will leave in droves, and no one will come take our place at those rates.

The security systems will fail and won’t be fixed, the walls will crumble and won’t be fixed, the fences won’t be fixed, the plumbing will stop working. I would expect at least 75% of the officers would leave as well.

The state is broke due to mismanagement, requiring purchasing to be from MWBE businesses at as much as 20% over lowest white male bidder, Cuomo giving money away to the Buffalo Billions, building film studios in Syracuse, handing it out to welfare and illegals, you name it. But yeah, go ahead and blame the working stiff. Yeah, go ahead and cut our pay 40%, because we OWE you something.

“Allow fracking in New York state”

Yes, another very big reason we are broke.

Too late now, gas prices are way down. We should have gotten in when the market was good, would have had many many revenue producing wells by now.

Also, he needs to stop blocking pipelines.

“Their state employee retirement system is unfunded ...”

You have absolutely no fecking idea what you are talking about. This is not Illinois.

The NY State retirement fund is actually quite healthy, one of the best in the nation. That is because the state can NOT put their hands on the money. Cuomo wanted a Constitutional Convention a couple of years ago because he wanted to change that.

Cuomo would LOVE to get his hands on the retirement fund, but he can’t touch it.

New York has lost 50 Billion dollars in 6 months?
Seems that the folks running the state should do something about that instead of looking for some cash.
Maybe you can come up with an idea Andy, something that would start getting money back into the state/economy?
