A person attempting to break into a vehicle at 3 a.m was reported to have been shot on Friday morning, 4 September, 2020, near Milepost 364 on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina.
ASHEVILLE, N.C.
A man was shot while trying to break into a car Friday morning along the Blue Ridge Parkway, according to the National Park Service.
The owner of the vehicle was the shooter, officials said.
Craggy Gardens is the National Park Service facility located at milepost 364 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are no sleeping facilities near that location on the Parkway. There is a parking area and a visitor center. From nps.gov:
Sleeping and Eating:
Craggy Gardens Picnic Area: Pack a picnic basket and grab a table. The picnic area is open seasonally; check the opening schedule for specific dates. When you visit Craggy Gardens, we ask that you Leave No Trace.
Craggy Gardens does not offer any sleeping options. See nearby towns for accommodations. Along the Parkway, the closest campground is Crabtree Falls, 25 miles north.
Speculation: A person was sleeping in their vehicle, likely in the parking area of Craggy Gardens. At 3 a.m., an intruder attempted to break into the vehicle. The vehicle owner called 911; but responders were too far away to intervene. The owner, had a firearm then shot the intruder in self-defense. Craggy Gardens is one of the most popular spots on the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is 469 miles long.

The Dodge Freightliner Sprinter vans are a popular vehicle to convert into campers. The image of the vehicle, shown in dense fog, suggests that visibility was severely limited at the time of the shooting.

You gotta be prepared for bear attacks.
And that would be my story too....’sorry officer, I thought it was a bear.’
My Converted Sprinter has 260+ k miles and is 14 years old.
It has traveled coast to coast twice once on sections of the Oregon trail bound for Alaska and the Arctic circle. The second trip was along the the Butterfield trail from Memphis to San Francisco. Then, we traveled the American heartland north to south along the Great River Road.
The Sprinter visited the Yukon gold fields and ventured as far north as the mighty McKinsey river
Our Sprinter is literally seeped in Americana.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is a beautiful drive.

I hope you stopped at Fast Eddies in Alton IL for a burger and a beer. Its the best watering hole in the Midwest.

Bert, you got to share some pictures of that van.
DEAD IS AN OPTION...................
That it is. Especially in Fall.
You are sleeping in the vehicle. That is your home. Someone breaking into your home at night gets shot. End of discussion. Clean up the mess.
I follow several van-life travelers on youtube. One guy has high lumen LEDs mounted on the roof line that light up an area 30’ around the van like a football stadium at night.
A few years back NC passed into law a castle doctrine act that allows deadly force to stop or prevent forced entry... It applies to home, work, car, tent, etc.
Protects the shooter from civil litigation as well.
“The shooter, and owner of the vehicle being broken into called 911 immediately to report the incident and is currently being held by investigators.”
Is the owner/shooter being held in jail?
They released the shooter after a few hours of investigation.
The person who was shot remains in custody, along with his sister, who was an accomplice.
They are 23 and 24 years old, and have had involvement with the drug trade.
I love stories with happy endings!!!

Diesel?
The Dodge Sprinter badge conceals an all Mercedes identity. The Sprinter has a turbocharged 5 cylinder diesel tahe gets now about 22+ MPG cruising at 70 on the interstate.
Last month I sent an oil sample in for analysis and the actual wear is very little. They recommend that the oil change interval be reduced from 12k to 10 k miles.
It doesn’t get any better than that.
“The Blue Ridge Parkway is a beautiful drive.”
It is. The 45mph speed limit drives me crazy, but 45 isn’t unreasonable considering the twists & turns. We were actually doing 35 yesterday on the Parkway west of Asheville. The dogs were hanging out the back windows and we didn’t want to lose any of them by going around a curve too fast.
Noticed the dogwood leaves already turning reddish. Wonderful drive.
