The French film Cuties, currently available on Netflix, has outraged American politicians who say it sexualizes prepubescent girls. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (DHawaii), a former presidential contender, warns that Cuties, which depicts an 11-year-old's participation in a risqué dance troupe that flouts the values of her conservative Muslim family, "will certainly whet the appetite of pedophiles & help fuel the child sex trafficking trade." Sen. Ted Cruz (RTexas) goes even further, suggesting that Cuties is illegal. Whatever your take on the film's merits, Cruz presents no evidence to substantiate that claim.
In a letter he sent Attorney General William Barr on Friday, Cruz urges the Justice Department to "investigate the production of 'Cuties' and Netflix's distribution of the film in order to determine whether Netflix, any of its executives, or anyone involved with the making of 'Cuties' violated any federal laws against the production and distribution of child pornography." But he conspicuously fails to explain how the film runs afoul of those statutes.
"The film routinely fetishizes and sexualizes these pre-adolescent girls as they perform dances simulating sexual conduct in revealing clothing, including at least one scene with partial child nudity," Cruz writes. "These scenes in and of themselves are harmful. And it is likely that the filming of this movie created even more explicit and abusive scenes, and that pedophiles across the world in the future will manipulate and imitate this film in abusive ways."
Except for Cruz's fact-free speculation about scenes that did not make it into the final movie, none of this supports his claim that Cuties qualifies as child pornography, which federal law defines as a "visual depiction" of "sexually explicit conduct" involving people younger than 18. While the definition encompasses "simulated sexual intercourse," that phrase is not broad enough to cover the scenes described by Cruz.

Low rent Black Ghislaine Maxwell....
there was a creature here defending this film.
Libertarians are the child molesters party. They think parents can choose their guardians. They also do a good job of siphoning off the votes of Republicans so Democrats can win. One Libertarian was in BLM and he was shot. (un)reason magazine eulogized him.
Naked pictures of children isnt a sex act either...
We cancelled Netflix on Sunday.
I dont watch anything that exploits children, particularly girl children, in manners I would never allow my own daughter to act
What is wrong with the mother of your Hod children? As a God mother you agreed to be sure they were raised in the ways of the Lird. Whats up with you?
It was filmed in France. A totally different culture. Not sure the United States even has standing in the case.
#okpedo
Not all degeneracy is illegal.
But it’s still indefensible.
Libertarian right? Figures.
You keep digging your hole deeper in defending this movie. A movie like you are describing could have been made without actually doing what it’s supposedly decrying- the sexual exploitation of children. The producers of this film solicited 100’s of videos of 11 year old children dancing erotically to audition for the movie. And then had 11 year old children perform the following in the movie- talk about penis size, simulate intercourse with thrusting pelviv movements, grab their crotches, spread their legs wide open while the camera zooms in on their crotch area, etc.
You don’t make a movie about how bad drugs are by injecting someone with heroin or make a movie about killing someone is bad by actually killing someone.
2. What's wrong with the mother? - in my opinion, she was tired, she didn't even watch what was on TV, just taught the "voice of..." was a music program. In her defense, she did stop it after the criticism.
3. What's up with me? Yes I failed before that, the only excuse was that I wasn't there with them during weekday evenings. In this little way, I hope that I helped the mother
That’s a good review.
I agree with you that it’s no excuse for sexualizing children.
sorry, the guy’s face and voice was just too irritating for me to watch more than a few seconds.
He must be a perv to have been turned on.
That being said - I hope this movie brings up the disgusting way we treat kids on standard fare TV shows as well
With its recent enactment of a law which, by allowing consent by 14-year-olds to provide legal protection for 24-year-old pedophiles, puts California ahead of France in the race to legalize sexual abuse of children. The Pound-Me-Too movement must have missed this one.
Let’s make it clear - I’m not defending the movie. I’m point out two things
1. This is not the same movie as the trailer (which is disgusting)
2. This movie does have a message at its core on how TV and society sexualizes children.
As to your points
a. “A movie like you are describing could have been made without actually doing what its supposedly decrying- the sexual exploitation of children.” — yes, I agree
b. “the producers...” — I did not know that, that is disgusting
c. the rest, again disgusting.
To me I watched it only to understand what I was criticizing. I see it as flawed movie trying to talk about the exploitation of children and failing at that.
You are right - there is probably a better way and there ARE better films that don’t exploit kids.
But they get forgotten and unknown of
This film is out there — and lots of people are raising a hue and cry — and I HOPE that this will start us as a society ending the TV and movies that also sexualize children.
If this film gets society in a roar and ends much of the media sexualization of children, that would be a good thing
The courts say they’ll recognize pornography when they see it.
