The country is heading into a three-week nearly total lockdown on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, the government determined on Sunday after more than seven hours of heated debate. The closure will go into effect at 2 p.m. on Friday and last through October 9. During the lockdown, the school system will remain closed, except for special education and programs for at-risk youth. People will not be able to venture more than 500 meters from home. Restaurants, shopping centers and businesses that offer leisure and recreational activities will be shut down. There are detailed regulations that the government will approve in the next two days, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu explained during a briefing held shortly after the vote. I know these steps will take a heavy toll, that this is not the holiday we are used to, and that we will certainly not be able to celebrate with the whole family.

You can’t go for a 2 kilometer walk alone ... for public safety.
This is fascism.
Liberals have been demonizing Israelis for years as fascist, Nazis. Hence the comparisons between Israel’s decision not to let 4 generations of “Palestinians” kept in refugee camps in Muslim nations with apartheid and concentration camps.
Six months later...
I was at Ikea today in Jacksonville, Florida and the employees were saying they did not expect their shut down restaurant to reopen until next year.
Does the debate split along ideological lines in Israel like it does here? I.e. leftists favoring the lockdown and conservatives generally against it?
Pretty much. A very prominent minister from the religious party resigned over the lockdown, which weakens Netanyahu at a minimum.
Netanyahu is continuing along the line of appeasing Leftists.
Interesting that this is happening just in time for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
I wonder whats behind this because the timing is way to coincidental.
Reminds me of what they did with Easter here.
One of Netanyahu’s cabinet ministers resigned because this will impact the High holidays. He heads a religious party.
“And 90% of the scary statistics now appear to be wrong anyway.”
The cultists are eating this crap with a spoon.
This has become the Keystone Cops version of “pandemic”
management.
I think thats basically how it goes. Still, Im surprised theyre doing this, because the High Holy Days are coming up.
Thanks. Theyve been going back and forth over it for several days now and I think Netanyahu had said they werent going to shut down again...Im nit sure what happened to change that.
What changed it was a report released by the Israeli military that a second wave was coming.
Netanyahu held out as long as possible but the report’s findings were being backed up by the increasing number of new cases, hospital admissions and fatalities.
“Israel in second wave of coronavirus, death toll may soar”
A report by the Coronavirus National Information and Knowledge Center said Israel is experiencing a second wave of coronavirus and that hundreds of people could die from COVID-19 this summer.
If no action is taken and the current growth rate does not decrease significantly, the report states, then in a month, the number of new daily infections will be over 1,000 and the number of dead will reach many hundreds.
It added that, this situation could lead to exceedingly difficult financial decisions, to the point of closure.
According to the report, whose publication was overseen by the IDF Military Intelligence Division in cooperation with the Health Ministry, over the past few weeks, the number of new infections in Israel has consistently risen. From May 15 to 21, the average number of new infections per day was around 16. This week four weeks later the average is around 200.”
‘The report reflects the feelings of the health system that we are at the beginning of the second wave,’ said Assuta Ashdod Medical Center deputy director Dr. Hadar Marom.”
