Signs come down at former Douglas Park in North Lawndale

Chicago Park District staff began removing signs bearing the name “Douglas Park” Thursday morning.

The Park District Board voted Wednesday to officially remove the former namesake of the North Lawndale park, 1401 S. Sacramento Drive. Commissioners opened a 45-day public comment period to solicit ideas for renaming the park.

A campaign to rename the park after Frederick Douglass and his wife Anna Murray-Douglass has been in the works for years. Frederick Douglass, a former slave and abolitionist, escaped in large part because of the support of his first wife Anna Murray-Douglass.

The park district plans to have the old signs removed by next week. The former namesake Stephen Douglas was a U.S. senator from Illinois and a slave owner who lost to Abraham Lincoln in the 1860 presidential election.

The board voted in July to begin the process of removing Stephen Douglas’ name from the park, which was named after him in 1869.

Fact check: Douglas married a woman from North Carolina. His in-laws owned a Mississippi plantation on the Pearl River. Douglas derived some income from the plantation.

By the same token, Abraham Lincoln ought to be a target of the cancel culture as well since his spouse, Mary Todd Lincoln, was from a family which included Kentucky slave owners.

Frederick Douglass believed that black people could achieve and succeed by their own efforts, in spite of obstacles including racist oppression. This is a totally unacceptable sentiment in today’s environment, so I’m sure he’ll be off the signs shortly, replaced by a deceased felon.

Lincoln statues have been removed by demand of the cancel cultists albeit for a mix of reasons. Given that history, if taught at all, is taught from the LEFT in school and college, these cultists probably have never needed that background to be destroyers.

nothing wrong to be slave owner in 1700's. the slave owners gave us independence, constitution and the country itself.

Many times when Chicago news gets posted there is a reference to an areas name which is what the community is known by. Lawndale is an area just west of Chicago’s Loop roughly bounded by 12th Street (Rooevelt Road) on the north, Cermack (22nd st_) on the south, Canal street on the east, and Damen on the west. North Lawndale ends at Madison.
