Were lockdowns a mistake? To that nagging question, the answer increasingly seems to be yes.
Certainly, they were a novelty. As novelist Lionel Shriver writes, Weve never before responded to a contagion by closing down whole countries. As Ive noted, the 1957-58 Asian flu killed between 70,000 and 116,000 Americans, between 0.04 percent and 0.07 percent of the nations population. The 1968-70 Hong Kong flu killed about 100,000, 0.05 percent of the population.
The US coronavirus death toll of 186,000 is 0.055 percent of the current population. It will go higher, but its about the same magnitude as those two flus, and it has been less deadly to those under 65 than the flus were. Yet there were no statewide lockdowns; no massive school closings; no closings of office buildings and factories, restaurants and museums. No one considered shutting down Woodstock.
Why are attitudes so different today? Perhaps we have greater confidence in governments effectiveness. If public policy can affect climate change, it can stamp out a virus.
Plus, were much more risk-averse. Children arent allowed to walk to school; jungle gyms have vanished from playgrounds; college students are shielded from microaggressions. We have a safetyism mindset, as Jonathan Haidt and Greg Lukianoff write in The Coddling of the American Mind, under which many aspects of students lives needed to be carefully regulated by adults.

The big difference between prior flus and today: WELFARE!
Take away gov’t welfare / handouts and it would defy all common sense for any previous generations to accept a global shutdown.
Now looking? I have been a COVID skeptic since before day 1. I have never been afraid of COVID. All of the people who have been going on and on about how dangerous it is will not come back and apologize for feeding the frenzy. We have many in our very midst. Most of them will come back and claim that they too were skeptical just so they dont look like the idiots that they are.
Brian Griffin wrote:
“An article on Smartnews from the South China Morning Post said over 100,000 Chinese have already gotten vaccinated against Covid.”
Will the effect be the same on those folks, as what happened to those Chinese that were vaccinated against SARS?
IIRC, those that were vaccinated against SARS were decimated by the wuhanvirus...
Oh, puleeeese! I grew up an only child out in the country with one tv channel, no phone and long before ipads to talk to the entire world. Good memories of childhood. Far from excruciating.
No they won't. They'll say they were right and the lockdowns saved the USA from being wiped out. The panic people - and I have a few in my own family - are way too invested in being right about this than to ever reflect honestly on their panic and support for lockdowns.
Were you allowed to go outside?
If they really thought this was a killer plague, would they really have openly supported their own followers and voters from congregating in massive numbers for three months straight? Nope. They know it's just a way to step on our necks.
Try the 1960s and 1950s, where kids did target practice with rifles as a school sport and mass shootings didn’t largely happen at schools at anywhere near the rate from the 1990s Onward.
.
But weren’t most of the tuberculosis cases in third world countries?
I knew this from day 1. I knew it was fake and the democrats and the corrupt media ran with it. Does not help trump is ok with it.
Especially if the child is a young boy. There is a whole cadre of beta male "nice guys" in our society right now, and the reason they're like that, according to Dr. William Glover, is because early abandonment issues persuaded them that they were inherently bad people. So imagine what healthy women 20 years from now will wind up saddled with, sad to say, if they get involved with certain men who were young boys during these lockdowns. More divorces, breakups and bad sex.
I’m not sure he’s doing that any more. He now has Dr. Scott Atlas on his team, and this gentleman favors a much more (classically) liberalized public policy with respect to the Chinese Frankenvirus.
Effing geniuses finally figuring that out. Bet they vote Democratic or play footsie with the Bushies.
I firmly believe that the only reason we added 1.4 million jobs in August, as opposed to several million, is due to Gavin Newsom continuing to keep California, a state with some 40 million people, in a partial, if not mostly complete, lockdown. In contrast, my governor (Lockdown Larry Hogan, Corrupt RINO) finally opened us up to Phase III (the most open with some restrictions remaining) on September 4 at 5:00 pm.
Of course, if that’s similar to what Newsom has in place, then never mind. I’m simply under the impression that Newsom’s restrictions are much more severe.
I disagree that it’s “just the flu,” but other than that, you are absolutely correct. Most of this stuff has simply turned out to be ridiculous.
People still believe the “lockdown” had anything to do with a disease or control of said disease.
How special. Bless their hearts.
In other news, Water might be Wet...
Society is far more risk adverse, we are far more willing to exchange freedom for security, well you all know how that saying goes.
