China recently launched the Clean Plate Campaign, which targets people wasting food, as speculation of a worldwide food shortage mounts.
President Xi Jinping has pushed new measures to curb food waste following the virus pandemic, calling those who live stream their eating experiences on social media as shocking and distressing.
Too strict or not strict enough? A recent @CNN article says the authoritarian China wants to control what people eat with its new clean plate campaign, but also suggests the campaign isnt specific enough. Its too confusing! Seems like China can do no right! pic.twitter.com/RRDZLmFo98

Jinping said China had to maintain a sense of crisis about food security amid the virus pandemic. The warning comes as the worlds second-largest economy could soon face food shortages. Besides the virus-induced economic downturn disrupting food supply chains, theres been droughts, floods, and pests that are likely to result in poor harvests this year.
Chinese state news agency, the Global Times, downplayed the notion China is headed for a food crisis. Some restaurants in China have limited the number of dishes served to diners, while others have weighed customers before ordering.
Estimates show China wastes enough food to feed 30 to 50 million people per year, according to a study published by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the World Wildlife Fund in China. The governments abrupt crackdown on food waste suggests a shortage could be nearing:
But the campaign [Clean Plate Campaign] has raised speculation China could be facing a food shortage, although state media outlets were quick to try and stop the panic of imminent food shortages, reporting that China had recently seen consecutive bumper grain harvests and record high grain output.
As living standards have raised, so has consumption. Obesity levels have soared...

Coming to America.
Count on it.
Wow, remember the old adage about cleaning your plate? “Eat your vegetables, people are starving in China.” And how is the supreme leader going to enforce this? one hundred million more cops knocking on every door, watching every meal?
Our Family were members of the Clean Plate Club during WWII.
did the three gorges dam ever break?
F China. I hope Bat Lady is in a deep dark cell with the rest of her co workers.
I spent many an evening alone at the dinner table staring down the broccoli on my plate. We had a mandatory clean the plate club in my house.
The vast majority of protein in the Chinese diet is pork. China’s pork production has been hammered with a porcine disease that has wiped out at least 50% of its pork production.
Their chicken production has been severely hurt by numerous outbreaks of disease. Their latest issue is they attempted to import many thousands of New Zealand Cattle and the ship bringing that cattle was swamped and sank in a typhoon just last week.
Torrential rains for weeks on end have wiped out their vegetable and grain production and threaten to topple the largest dam structure on earth. But, other than this China is doing just fine.
Na they can make lots of Soylent Green
Love broccoli, one of the healthiest veggies you can eat.
The Chinese Commies can spend less money on their MILITARY WAR MACHINE and more on food....but I forget, people don’t matter in the CCP. But warships, planes, etc do....
A nation of 1.3 billion with limited farmland is always subject to food shortages. It takes only one major calamity to precipitate serious supply problems.Covid has created serious disruptions but not overt, critical nationwide shortages. China has trade surpluses and the credit available to import the food it needs. Rising food prices and shortages will create political, social and economic instability. However classic famine in China is not likely.
The situation would be much different and critical in 1988 when China had a rigid communist agricultural system.
Is China on the brink of a major food shortage? I sure hope so.
WOW I never thought I would see the ole “guns and butter” from Econ 101 appear in an article so blatantly.
Not yet but it’s constantly being reported that it’s about to. That’s been said for years. And yet the bloody thing is still there. Makes one wonder.
Raising seven kids my mother quickly gave up trying to get us to eat stuff we didn’t like.
Yup.
Half a century+ ago told to eat every last grain of rice for the “poor starving boy in China.”
Now I wish I’d never cleaned my plate.
F-’n Chicoms.
Let’s help the Chinese achieve a food shortage.
