Apple has just made a striking new privacy move ahead of the launch of iOS 14 and the iPhone 12.
Some things shouldnt be sharedyour passwords, your credit card details, and what youve been reading and buying on the internet. Thats the striking message purveyed by Apple in its new privacy ad in a strong signal to rivals such as Google that the firm means business ahead of the launch of its iOS 14 operating system....
...The campaign comes on the eve of the launch of iOS 14, which is likely to drop in the coming weekspossibly soonerand close to the release of the iPhone 12. Like its predecessor, iOS 14 focuses heavily on security and privacy, but it raises the stakes even further....
... One major privacy feature in iOS 14 is the need for apps to actively ask for permission before tracking you across services. Apple will allow you to choose between Allow Tracking or Ask App Not To Track.
This has caused quite a stir, with Facebook saying it will no longer be able to collect iPhone identifiers for advertisers (IDFA) from users, hugely impacting the business model of itself and its advertisers....
... As well as insisting on more transparency from developers over the data they collect, iOS 14 also includes a cool new indicator light in the status bar that will alert you if an app is trying to record you using your microphone or camera.

Good!............ 🤑
ask means the app still gets to decide if it will or if it won't
If they keep this up I might consider an apple. However it's probably just a way to steal business from Facebook.

No, I think it means that once you ask not to be tracked, the app chooses to either NOT track you or NOT allow you to use it.
i’d like to see it tested
I use Quicken 2017 and refuse to upgrade to their new subscription model. Recently I’ve been getting a “data set” error that only occurs when I’m online. Called tech support and they do nothing but try to sell you the subscription service. I went to my firewall and blocked all things Quicken form having access to the internet, problem solved.
What’s interesting is bow, I get popups from the program trying to “Phone Home” when I make certain transactions, not all. Guarantee they are tracking everyone’s data for marketing purposes and people don’t even know.
If we actually had legislators someone would create a standard on how all personnel data is defined in applications. These apps would be reviewed by a third party and given a certificate of compliance. On top of this, the operating systems would have to notify you if any of this information is being sent online and require your permission, problem solved. Unfortunately, this will never happen.

Apple is not in the ad business and so cannot ‘steal’ anything from FB. Google is also in the ad business and that’s what their Android OS does: sell ads. Android is the least private of the two OSes.
