Barr tightens rules on surveillance of political candidates

The Justice Department announced new restrictions Tuesday on how it conducts any secret national security surveillance of candidates for federal office or their staff.

The restrictions, announced by Attorney General William Barr in a pair of memos, are part of broader changes to the Justice Department’s surveillance procedures implemented in response to problems detected during the 2016 investigation into ties between Russia and President Donald Trump’s campaign.

Coming just two months before the 2020 election, the changes are designed to ensure that law enforcement officials have to clear additional hurdles before pursuing the same type of surveillance as was conducted on a former adviser to Trump’s 2016 campaign. […]

One new policy would require the FBI to consider briefing a federal candidate or staffer that the person was being targeted by a foreign power before applying for a warrant from the secretive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to eavesdrop on their communications. …

Maybe when Barr is done with this meaningless decree, he can tell the FBI to arrest the terrorist murderer of Jay Bishop up in Portland.

If he's not too busy. I mean Panera does have a nice coupon this week.

It is not a lack of rules that caused the problems of 2016 and 2017. It was ignoring the existing rule and laws.

The thing that needs to happen is investigation and prosecution of those involved at all levels. All they have done so far is whitewash and rule out all the top players. Shame! They should not be above the law.

This looks like they are trying to create an appearance of doing something by prosecuting a low-level flunkie and set up some new rules.

Slow walking, clearing the names of the high level decision makers, phony investigations, withholding pertinent documents and information - all this has been the name of the game for the last three years.

Great. So when D’s are in power, they weaponize federal agencies, but when R’s are in power, and D’s would be the target, we get reform and restraint. When D’s are once again in power, they’ll just ignore and/or repeal the rules. How do you win fighting asymmetrically like that?

You don’t win, and isn’t that really the whole point of the GOP? Certified losers.
