~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: United States Coast Guard Academy, Connecticut

CTuscgacademy3

The United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) is the service academy of the United States Coast Guard in New London, Connecticut. Founded in 1876, it is the smallest of the five U.S. service academies and provides education to future Coast Guard officers in one of nine major fields of study. Unlike the other service academies, the Coast Guard Academy does not require a congressional nomination for admission.

Students are officers-in-training and are referred to as cadets, and upon graduation receive a Bachelor of Science degree and are commissioned as Coast Guard ensigns with a five-year active-duty service obligation, with additional years if the graduate attends flight school or subsequent government-funded graduate school.

Out of approximately 250 cadets entering the academy each summer, around 200 graduate. Cadets can choose from among nine majors, with a curriculum that is graded according their performance in a program of academics, physical fitness, character, and leadership.

Each cadet takes two semesters of classes during the school year and then spends the majority of the summer in military training to produce officers of character with the requisite professional skills. Among these are courses in leadership, ethics, organizational behavior, and nautical science.

The majority of cadets report to their first units after graduating, which are either afloat units, shore units, or basic flight training as student naval aviators, with the training conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Navy. Those that are assigned afloat serve as either deck watch officers or student engineers.

Academics at the USCGA stress the sciences and engineering, but different courses of study are available. In addition, several of the majors offer tracks of specialization, for example, Marine and Environmental Science majors can choose to focus on biology, chemistry, or geophysics. Cadets sometimes opt to take elective courses with Connecticut College, adjacent the academy's campus, as part of an open exchange agreement.

Hi, Lauren! Thanks for a great road trip visit the Coast Guard in Connecticut! They are so hard-working and keep our waterways safe and secure! My son used to coordinate with them when he worked for the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center [RCC] at Langley AFB in Virginia. He had some wild stories to tell!

Gentle half inch of rain over 12 hours...thirsty plants appreciated it and the creeks never darkened.

Trees swayed for a couple of minutes but no significant damage....good thing because I just had YET ANOTHER white ash topple “thanks” to the Asian emerald ash borer. And my wood racks are full from the previous casualties. This one will be for 2023-2024.

Good evening, radu...was today a good chance of some rain day? Did it happen? Hope so!

High winds, but rain, too, over night, and drizzles all day. More than a half inch so far. We will take what we can get.

Howdy, luvie.

Have you been lucky enough to get a little rain today or did it all fire up east of you?

Thank you for sharing.

I don’t believe I have seen those pictures before. It is good to connect a face to Brian’s name.

May his Memory be Eternal!

Hi, there, radu!

It actually fired up northwest of us and crept close and then hopped over us to move east. But, it’s cooler so I’ll take that instead.

Did any rain or coolness make it to your neck of the woods?

Howdy, Kathy.

Yes, we did get some rain this afternoon when a thunderstorm blew through and chances are decent for us getting more the next few days. We’ll take it!

It looked pretty ugly up your way today. It was raining hard enough for a while at the airport, it was difficult to see the cargo jets flying in. Noisy, too, with the wind whipping across the mic. Still noisy and the trees are leaning in the wind.

Your temps have sure cooled down!

I hope today hasn’t been too crazy work-wise.

Dang the luck! That’s what happens to us all too often.
It was already east of you when I checked the radar.

It did cool off after the rain blew through but was toasty before that. It’ll be pretty much the same scenario the next few days. At this point they’re saying the weekend will be dry and almost like Fall with highs in the low 80s and lows in the low 60s. That’ll be nice!

“Almost like Fall” sounds like music to my sweating ears! LOL! BTW...it was snowing in the mountains of WY/Idaho today. It looked so refreshing. I know THAT’S too cold, but still.

BRRRRRR!! Too early to think about snow and the cold that comes with it. That’s why I won’t live any farther north than I do. LOL

Yeah, that weekend forecast sounds delightful with those temps. It’s been a while since I’ve worn long sleeves but I’ll need to at night when I sit outside with Jobu.

Ahhhh...long sleeves. I’d better remember to pack some sweaters for the WY trip. Nights are going to be chilly...chilly enough to wear sweats to sleep in.

So...Jobu it is then! Good name. Strong!
