Boeing is seeking to increase black US employees throughout the company by 20 percent and mandate benchmarks for hiring people of color, Chief Executive Dave Calhoun told employees in a memo on Friday reviewed by Reuters.
US corporations have become more responsive to complaints related to racial equality following a summer of sweeping anti-racism protests over the slaying of black people by police.
The changes at Boeing, a stalwart defense contractor with its corporate headquarters in Chicago and largest factories in Washington state and South Carolina, appeared to mark the first concrete steps by the planemaker to address the issue.
We understand we have work to do, Calhoun said in the memo, which was released on the 57th anniversary of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jrs I Have a Dream speech and included references to the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin on Sunday.
Boeing declined to provide its current number of black employees or a timeline for the new target.
The planemaker separately has had to lay off thousands of workers as it grapples with the financial fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic and the 17-month-old grounding of the 737 MAX after two fatal crashes.
In the memo, Calhoun said the company would establish an internal Racial Justice think-tank to guide its policies.
On June 23, a manager at Boeings Everett factory found racist symbols at his work station, according to an email from Commercial Airplanes Chief Executive Stan Deal to employees seen by Reuters. The manager is black, a person familiar with the incident said.
The company launched an internal investigation and referred the matter to police, Deal said, calling the incident disheartening and a stark reminder of how far our society has to go.

Mantra changes...”If its Boeing I ain’t going.”
Twenty percent may be hired in order to train and maintain a 13-15% black workforce... 3% yellow Asian, 5% 3d teir India-ns, 45-48% white, and a sprinkling of South of the oarderers, and one Martian.
“No Whitys need to apply.”
Won’t be flying with them....
Lost getting a good job at a college in 1969 because I was told I was what they were looking for but I was the wrong color.
Boeing should expand its diversity training program. In fact forget about those planes. Concentrate on the diversity program. That is the real growth industry. Hiring based on skin color rather than competence could cause problems. Of course competence is a racist concept. The CEO should stick to washing feet as a less costly way of virtue signaling. There are black engineers. We could never have gotten to the moon if it were not for those female black mathematicians. I know thats true cause I saw it in a movie. Who knows? The planes may magically fly off in a cloud of exuberance and joy. Then again we are competing against the Chinese who sadly lack diversity.
Write that into the defense or Government contracts and then collude with the Contrac Agency folks to rewrite the tech specifications and requirements for 20%er’s.
Why not just do what the NBA does and hire 85% of your athletes as black
Is this some sort of admission that they’ve been consciously underpaying blacks for many years?

You would think they should want an increase in QUALIFIED employees no matter what color of skin.
Get ready for the inevitable reverse discrimination lawsuits.
If Boeing wants to recruit QUALIFIED individuals to build planes, I suggest they recruit them from U.S. Navy and Air Force aviation repair sailors and airmen. They are plenty of black within those groups.
Well, that’s a twist. Who doesn’t want race normed AA hires engineering the aircraft they fly on? If it’s Boeing I ain’t going.
They will just add people to HR or create entire new departments for diversity or cultural sensitivity or whatever squidgy, useless thing they can dream up.
They will bring back in house heavily minority employee things they have outsourced like “environmental services” (janitors) and the company cafeteria.
The fact they don't tell you what the "racist symbol" is implies it's something like a coffee mug with a decal of a Southern state flag.
If it was purposely left on the desk of a black employee, he has a right to be ticked. I'd be ticked if someone put up a Biden-Harris bumper sticker somewhere in my cube.
It’s all about buying time till they can pull the ripcord on their golden parachutes, as the company makes the Great Kaboom behind them.
Pay blacks more to make bad planes because whitey flies a lot?
gee... hiring solely based on skin color
totally not racist at all
/eye-roll
Since "people of color" includes South Asians, Boeing will ask for massive new H1B exemptions to fill these slots from India.
I don’t care if the employees are black or white. What I do care about is that they are talented and qualified to the point that air planes with hundreds of people on them don’t crash into the ground. It appears that Boeing only cares about Quota’s and that they have learned nothing at all. Maybe their business license should be revoked before they kill a bunch more innocent people due to incompetence.
My friend was an engineer there there when early diversity hiring reared its head. The more diversity, the lower the quality of work became. So here comes more diversity, and she’s worried about what will happen to her pension.
