Bread prices to rise after extreme weather causes UK's worst wheat harvest in 40 years

The UK's worst wheat harvest in 40 years is set to cause a price hike in flour and bread, the agricultural industry warned. Due to last autumn's heavy rains, only 40 percent of the usual amount of wheat crop was planted, while this year's wild weather also affected crops that are being harvested.

"We're looking at a 30 percent reduction in our good fields, in some of our poor fields it's even more," said Matt Culley, a farmer from Hampshire and chairperson of the National Farmers' Union (NFU).

The federation said only 40 percent of the usual amount of wheat crop was planted last October due to heavy downpours.

Severe weather continued to hit the agricultural sector this year as droughts earlier in the season affected the quality of crops being harvested now. The dry spells were followed by lots of August rains, resulting in poor quality harvests.

Cirencester farmer Ed Horton said his crops usually yield around 2 500 tonnes of wheat, but this year, his crops are down to 580 tonnes. "It has a huge knock-on effect on our finances," he told Sky News.

"We've produced a third of what we usually would, therefore there's a large hole in our cash flow and we've had to replace wheat with other crops that we don't make as much money out of."

It would take too long. Search for corn, wheat, and soybean futures to start. There’s also probably etfs for them but somebody else has to help you with that.

Global Warming / BRExit / Trump’s Fault
Take your pick
(BBC Scotaland already going with BRExit).

Britain can’t produce more than half of its required foodstuff now, but we need more immigrants and refugees urgently.

Futures symbols are tricky. Try DBA for an etf. There are probably others but I don’t trade etfs.

US wheat harvest is slightly above average quantity.

We can send them a few ships worth.

That WILL help with their huge obesity problem, caused by the new strains of wheat now all through the Western world.

There was a gentleman on this board, Farmer Dean, who passed this year.

We had talked for years and he had a year’s worth of food and water and petrol on his farm. And a generator.

He also had a huge arsenal.

He always said something would come along and it would all be needed.

Unfortunately, he lost a 3 year battle with complications from colon cancer surgery this past spring.

I always thought his preparation was a little extreme but he would have been find through the initial shortages resulting from covid.

I pray his wife was able to hold onto everything and is able to take care of the farm and its affairs..something i know NOTHING about.

I knew that was you before looking at your name :)

Almost all of my aunts and uncle have lived/are living into their late 80s and 90s

They ate/eat an old world Italian diet.

NOTHING like Italian American food.

My generation strayed from that diet when we moved out.

We will not see such years.

LOL...nice. I’m CONVINCED that our dwarf wheat, coupled with sugar and HFCS, are 80% of our problems. Don’t get me wrong, I do respect what was done with wheat, as it literally kept billions from starving, but the flip side (huge obesity and diabetes) is terrible for public health.
