California wildfires: Neighbors with hoses target flames as crews urge them to stop

With California firefighters strapped for resources, residents have organized to put out flames themselves in a large swath of land burning south of San Francisco, defending their homes despite orders to evacuate and pleas by officials to get out of danger.

They are going in despite California’s firefighting agency repeatedly warning people that it’s not safe and actually illegal to go into evacuated areas, and they can hinder official efforts to stop the flames. The former head of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said the effort near a cluster of wildfires around the city of Santa Cruz is larger and more organized than he recalls in previous blazes.

“People are frustrated with the lack of resources available. People are always going to try to sneak back in, but it sounds like this is growing to a new level,” said Ken Pimlott, who retired as director of the Cal Fire in 2018. “I haven’t seen people re-engage to this scale, particularly with the level of organization.”

Sounds all well, until some thing doesn’t go as planned ie: wind shift or sparks fire up an area, or smoke overcomes a person etc etc. tough call, protect your stuff or let firefighters do it as they see the priorities to be.

In other news, government officials are pleading with armed citizens to stay home and let them take care of looters.

Bonus question:
When seconds count, how many minutes away are government emergency responders?

Perhaps the whole mask thing was to teach folks to distrust and ignore government. If so, it seems to be working.

Agreed. You’re very clearly risking your life trying to do this. These fires can shift rapidly and embers can literally spark new fires MILES away with no warning, potentially leaving you trapped between new fires and existing ones. Is it worth the risk to try and save houses and stuff? Maybe; that’s for each person to decide for themselves.

“People are frustrated with the lack of resources available.”

So, where are these resources going to come from if they are all engaged elsewhere? Faced with that and financial ruin verses cooking themselves, they are making a hobson’s choice.

Trust the government. They’ll take care of everything. Sure.

When seconds count, fire fighters are only minutes away.

My best friend lives near Paradise, the most destructive fire (so far) in CA history.

She’s installed sprinklers on her roof—it is a hard call to know when to try to evacuate and when to try to save the house. With the Paradise fire, some people burned in their cars trying to escape, while others who jumped into creeks lived. It was a ferocious fire.

Many in that area don’t trust government which is (one reason) why they moved to such a remote area to begin with. They don’t have a lot of great things to say about Cal Fire (or PG&E for that matter).

How big government of you. The insane number of fires burning in California are due to failures of government. Small civilians must passively wait until their over-paid public masters find time and resources to save them from the mess that they created. A free people cannot be passive subjects waiting on their masters to do everything for them and to them before doing anything for themselves.

I was a little surprised that there was no mention of these fires the RNC so far. Is there a reason that the Fed govt. has not provided any firefighting resources or assistance. Is this a case where the Governor must first request assistance, and the Cal Gov will only request assistance if he gets a full bail-out for the State’s disastrous management by the taxpayers from the rest of the country or something?

The CA Gov has quietly admitted that he’s getting all the Fed resources he’s asked for to fight these fires. Guess why you haven’t heard about it much.

All this is TRU back in 1991 when I was at Berkeley we had the big crazy fires in the Oakland hills and I rode my bike up to grizzly Peak and was helping homeowners but I always had an escape route down the backside of the mountain instantaneously if things got out-of-control

you have to have an escape route

The area we’re talking about off the 9. Felton Boulder Creek are gnarly Windee little tricky roads through the redwoods

I don’t think I’d want to be anywhere near there if there was a fire going on

I worked for Cal Fire long ago, when it was known as the California Division of Forestry. Our job was to keep things under control under the CCC boys arrived. I recall one fire I worked, a 5 acre fire in the forest...minuscule compared to what's going on now. We were on site for 24+ hours, one would be amazed at how quickly flareups popped up.

The terrain was rugged, and the wind shifted constantly. Throw in the ever present poison oak, with its smoke getting into/under your clothes, never a dull moment.

“The insane number of fires burning in California are due to failures of government.”

...not clearing brush and allowing trees to overcome forests instead of being thinned, as they should be. Saving (or saying you’re saving) the tree is a 1st priority.

but it sounds like this is growing to a new level..

Well, Ken. Maybe even liberals are beginning to realize that kommiefornia's policy of leaving dead pine needles and branches on the ground to provide food for snails and slugs, at the cost of their million dollar homes, is a terminally stupid policy.

Maybe even liberals are realizing that govt cares not one whit about citizens. Govt cares only about appeasing the loudest mouthed voters. In this case, the insane environazis who demand flammable food for snails.

Why do I see a parallel between this and the riots? Could it be my deep mistrust of democrats? The fact that they want the country in flames before the election? The fact that they hate you for owning private property? The fact that they think they know best?
