Why was a 17 year old kid walking around with an AR? I can see staying in one spot defending your house or business with that AR. No problem. Why be on the move surrounded by these idiots? Yes, if he was forced to move that’s a different story. Where are his parents?

All that said I don’t think he should be prosecuted. Just wondering why he was on the move in that environment. Nothing good was going to come of it. Now he’s screwed.

All this does is encourage people defending themselves to snipe and guerilla warfare. It’s not worth the consequences to do otherwise.

It appeared to be self defense to me but I've only seed videos in which he was being chased, knocked to the ground, and confronted by the individual he shot in the arm who appears to have had a handgun. I see two problems for him. First, he was in illegal possession of a rifle if he's under 18. There are no open hunting seasons in the city Kenosha. And we don't know what happened before he was chased. If he contributed to an argument which led to the chase, that will be a problem. Presuming the prosecutor is a liberal, he'll probably argue that, though WI is an open carry state, possession (even legally) was contributed to whatever disagreement led to the chase. Then there's disturbing the peace. Urban cities in WI have used that to prosecute legal open carry.

That said, and perhaps some of FR's attorneys could weigh in as I'm not, it seems to me the individuals chasing him, all of them, are complicit in the killings. I'm sorry it happened, this is going to mess up this kid's life.

I just watched what I think is the entire video. The initial shots on camera appeared to be self-defense to me. However, prior to that you can hear guys in the crowd asking “What did he do?” with an answer “He shot someone”. Also there appeared to be several follow-up shots well after those assaulting him cleared out. It looked like he fired a few random shots as he was walking away and somebody in the distance fired some as well. But they may have all come (or not come) from him....too hard to tell.

I don’t know if what we see on video is what is warranting the entirety of the charges or if he is also being charged for something that happened prior to that. Also, I wonder if those follow up shots might also comprise some charges.

If he committed a felony PRIOR to being assaulted (by shooting somebody NOT in self-defense), then I’d guess self-defense would be thrown out the window as the rioters would have been trying to subdue a shooter rather than an innocent bystander being assaulted by rioters.

I found it interesting that he appeared to be trying to turn himself in at the end, but the cops appear to have gone right by him. The gun wasn’t exactly hidden. But I’d conclude that the cops’ first priority was getting to the injured.

I suppose I’ll wait until more of the facts come out here. Just trying to look at this as objectively as possible.

There are a few things that throw a bit of a monkey wrench into a self-defense claim on his part:

1. He’s from Illinois. What was he doing in Kenosha, Wisconsin?

2. Can be legally carry an AR-15 in Wisconsin if he lives in Illinois?

3. Can be even OWN an AR-15 if he’s only 17?

James Fields was chased by an armed crowd, ran into a few of them with his car trying to get away, and a tremendously overweight woman had a heart attack nearby (unclear at best if Fields’ car struck her). Fields is in prison for life for her murder. This kid’s chances in court are slim.
