Hurricane Laura emerged from the Caribbean Sea, leaving behind flooding and fatalities in Hispaniola and Cuba. Former Hurricane Marco dissipated Tuesday morning, a few hours before Laura strengthened to a hurricane.

Katrina was a minor hurricane - the flooding occurred because the levees failed.
it was a Large CAT 5 shortly before landfall , Yes it weakened during landfall but it takes a while for the Ocean to calm down surge wise...plus it was a Large storm

katrina surge was not a minor hurricane surge for the MS gulf coast. 70 miles of coastline was completely scoured several blocks inland.
New Orleans got all the headlines and imagery, for various reasons but it is hard to convey the immensity of a debris field that long.

The car wash renamed itself the Blue Shed Car Wash after all the publicity. I’ve seen the Blue Shed in person.
I know the situation in NoLa was unique. I was thinking of the surge on the coast to the east- it was phenomenal.
I imagine river amd bayou surge is what NHC is talking about- but we’ll see.
Katrina was still a major Cat 3 at landfall. Ike was a high-end Cat 2. But both had been much stronger, and were very large, so they pushed massive amounts of surge, much higher than their wind categories would seem to indicate. They made the NHC rethink warnings just on wind, and now they are developing surge warnings as well.
That’s a very powerful storm.
