~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: Naval Submarine Base New London, Connecticut Naval Submarine Base New London is the United States Navy's primary East Coast submarine base, also known as the "Home of the Submarine Force". It is located in Groton, Connecticut directly across the Thames River from its namesake city of New London. Naval Submarine Base New London stretches along the east side of the Thames River, straddling the communities of Groton and Ledyard. While Groton is often referred to as the Submarine Capital of the World, the Base proudly bears the title - Home of the Submarine Force. Almost every submariner in todays Navy will be stationed here for training. A tour of duty in one of the fast-attack submarines home ported here or with a pre-commissioning crew for a new submarine under construction at General Dynamics Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton may follow. Occupying more than 680 acres, with more than 160 major facilities and 15 nuclear submarines, Naval Submarine Base New London supports fleet readiness by providing quality service and facilities to Naval Fleet, Fighters, and Families. The Base mission is twofold: to homeport and put Submarines to sea; and to support the Submarine Center of Excellence that trains Sailors to take Submarines to sea. Naval Submarine Base New London is also home to more than 70 tenant commands and activities including Commander Submarine Group Two; the Submarine Learning Center; Naval Submarine School; the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory; and, the Naval Undersea Medical Institute. On that patrol, I was reading Jean LeCarres tinker tailor soldier spy, and it bored me to tears.
Now I get it.
And yeah they were shooting over us but never knew we were there, and that is the way it is unless you want to start a war you stay undetected, it was intense, fires flooding, all hands on deck.
I will never forget those I served with

I went to sub school there, refrigeration, scrubber & burner and O2 generator schools there too. Had a home nearby while on the Patrick Henry SSBN 599. However, I can’t say I miss it.

I love the story about the early days of submarine espionage in like 67, some kid comes off a spec op and is drunk as **** at the horse and cow and calls the white house to tell the president what balls he has.
Now this kid is the one who did the deed but he is stoked and has the white house hotline, the operator traces it to the horse and cow in Vallejo, crosses data bases and calls his commander at 2:30 AM and says “look, I got one of your boys here, can you pick him up and secure him?”
THe old man is like “Aw jeez” and he goes down there buys them a round and takes them home.
Jeez I loved the sub service
