I was on 637s
the community is not huge, but I don’t remember everyone, we were rather busy
I worked lots of boats, ran spec ops on hawkbill and billfish
This always makes me mist up....

That’s a shame. You would have enjoyed jawin’ with those dudes! Lots of stories to pass around.
On that patrol, I was reading Jean LeCarres tinker tailor soldier spy, and it bored me to tears.
Now I get it.
And yeah they were shooting over us but never knew we were there, and that is the way it is unless you want to start a war you stay undetected, it was intense, fires flooding, all hands on deck.
I will never forget those I served with

I went to sub school there, refrigeration, scrubber & burner and O2 generator schools there too. Had a home nearby while on the Patrick Henry SSBN 599. However, I can’t say I miss it.

I don’t think that would put you off, they aint giving up technical secrets in the book , but it is very accurate about the tension and politics, and the danger

I love the story about the early days of submarine espionage in like 67, some kid comes off a spec op and is drunk as **** at the horse and cow and calls the white house to tell the president what balls he has.
Now this kid is the one who did the deed but he is stoked and has the white house hotline, the operator traces it to the horse and cow in Vallejo, crosses data bases and calls his commander at 2:30 AM and says “look, I got one of your boys here, can you pick him up and secure him?”
THe old man is like “Aw jeez” and he goes down there buys them a round and takes them home.
Jeez I loved the sub service
