WASHINGTON: In a 5 to 0 sweep, an AI pilot developed by Heron Systems beat one of the Air Forces top F-16 fighter pilots in DARPAs simulated aerial dogfight contest today.
Its a giant leap, said DARPAs Justin (call sign Glock) Mock, who served as a commentator on the trials.
AI still has a long way to go before the Air Force pilots would be ready to hand over the stick to an artificial intelligence during combat, DARPA officials said during todays live broadcast of the AlphaDogfight trials. But the three-day trials show that AI systems can credibly maneuver an aircraft in a simple, one-on-one combat scenario and shoot its forward guns in a classic, WWII-style dogfight. On the other hand, they said, it was an impressive showing by an AI agent after only a year of development. (As I reported earlier this week, the program began back in September last year with eight teams developing their respective AIs.)
Heron, a small, female- and minority-owned company with offices in Maryland and Virginia, builds artificial intelligence agents, and is also a player in DARPAs Gamebreaker effort to explore tactics for disrupting enemy strategies using real-world games as platforms. The company beat eight other teams, including one led by defense giant Lockheed Martin which came in second in the AlphaDogfight semi-finals that pitted the AI pilots against each other this morning.

“Heron, a small, female- and minority-owned company “
Translation... a massively smart guy with a hispanic or asian wife made sure to incorporate with her as a co-owner so they qualify of all kinds of advantages in bidding.
Stealthy drones with AI are the future.
“Heron, a small, female- and minority-owned company” With all sincerity, no, No, NO!

Well if they are smart enough to hire talent solely based on skills they will go far ...
Diversity Kills!
All that counts are results.
Damn' right no, No, NO! They're gonna kill all us white guys first.
One would think that there has to be some kind of ability for ground control to intervene, in case orders change or as a safety measure. So my question is whether whatever signalling system used for that purpose can be jammed, etc...
Actually - everything that flies will be automated, soon.
Why risk human lives and make engineering restrict itself to protecting a temperature-sensitive, oxygen-requiring, g-limited squishy, space-using system when AI can do the job even better?
On 29 August, SKYNET becomes self aware.......
Or perhaps they will have human pilots aboard?
Can Cylon Riders be far behind?
Careful. The Chinee are way ahead of us in AI. DiFi and others play footsie with the Chinee and our intellectual property may have already been xferred to the Chinee.
Its worse than that. They are listed as a small disadvantaged business. Look that up and cringe.
Whatever. During simulation I’m the best lover in the world. :)
Simulation ain’t never like the real ****ing thing.
yep.. exactly

OK, and next include all the passengers.
They can go to their virtual destination and vacation via Zoom.
