The 2020 Atlantic Hurricane season continues to heat up as we are two weeks shy of average season peak activity. Two tropical systems are taking aim at the Gulf of Mexico concurrently. Tropical Storm Laura has formed east of the Leeward Islands. Marco is approaching the Yucatan Peninsula.
There is a possibility we may see the amazing Fujiwhara Effect, where two storms within 870 miles of each other will dance around each other. If one storm is significantly stronger, the weaker storm will be absorbed into the stronger storm. If the two storms are similar in size, they can gravitate toward each other until they reach a common point where they either merge or they spin each other around for a while before they spin off in different directions. The likelihood of a Fujiwhara Effect is low, however, due to the relatively small area in the Gulf of Mexico.
Laura's fate is dependent upon the extent of interaction with the tall mountains of Hispanola and Cuba.

That’s true, love the hill country. Spent many years of my youth around Bandera and Helotes, and over around Vanderpool and the Llano.
Pretty place. Hope you get your rain.
Based on the projections, Laura will run up on Marco. Looks like a double storm. Should be interesting to watch.
TS Allison was another doozy. Came up off the gulf, went up to about Lufkin, then came back.
The lightning in the north woke me up at 4:30 this morning.
Then we got winds of about 60mph before the rain finally came down.
So far 0.90” has fallen. That’s the most rain in one event since the end of May.
We’re beyond parched here.
I’m praying Marco makes another dent in this drought.
Looks like you've got your hands full with two at the same time!! All of your work on these storms is very much appreciated!!
Thank you for adding me. Bookmarking for later.
I heard one of the meteorologists say that Laura will push Marco more west as it moves north and it will weaken Marco as well.
One place I definitely do not want to be in is East Texas, or Western Louisiana.
I am in the Dominican Republic now, in the city of Santo Domingo (working) on the south coast. Fifth floor, my view is to the south but no water is visible through the buildings of the city.
Sat, 09:30 AM update. This morning, Saturday 22 Aug, we have clear skies, low winds and small clouds coming from the east - coming from the storm’s direction. Rain bands last night, and heavy rains yesterday late afternoon. Winds are increasing, but it is sunny.
I first read the title as something about Laura Loomer and Marco Rubio having a tiff.
“Disorganized Laura “
Dated her for a while in my younger days.
TY. 36 hours ago, the NHC had Laura progged to make landfall generally in the FL Panhandle, right at the AL border (a particular concern to us). They’ve since shifted the tracks of both storms west, but are still befuzzled as of this morning as to where either will actually land or how they’ll interact. Continuing to watch closely.
Thanks for checking in. I don’t recall us ever having someone in the DR posting during a storm. Please continue to provide local updates as you are able.

Very cool that a forecast model picked up a Fujiwhara!
Thanks for your thoughtful feedback!
I dont think Marco survives the strong shear to the north of the system. Sa
Interesting. Last evening our local meteorologist said the Fujiwhara potential was low because of the small area in the Gulf of Mexico.
I was south of Houston during Harvey. For a few days I was living on an island but never lost power. Only material thing I lost was my car.
Now my daughter lives a little further south than I did and said she won’t be staying if the storm(s) are coming there. I told her to be sure and get out before the mass amount of traffic. A guy I used to work with lives just NW of Houston and said he sat in traffic for 18 hours (to get 250 miles) fleeing a previous hurricane.
I’m close to Fort Hood and we got a nice thunderstorm last night.
