Dear Altucher,
Have you not walked the streets? Have you not seen the people here? Born here, bred here, living and breathing here.
They are scrappy, scared, hungry, and tired, but more importantly, theyre pissed. If anything the rebel cry of thousands, millions, fighting to live is what should terrify anyone that dare declare us dead.
New York isnt just Broadway shows, boutiques, restaurants, and comedy clubs. All of that is just a beautiful by-product of this place. A place that ceaselessly churns out cultures and food and languages and arts and ideas that are so revered because the people who comprise them make it so.

Theyve learned to thrive in the seedy underbelly that threatens to drag all of us, East New York to Bay Ridge, Queensbridge to Laurelton, Mott Haven to Mount Vernon, from the Battery to the Heights, Staten Island, Black, White, whatever.
New York is a dream of subverting circumstances to rise above, and yes, it is also destruction, hopelessness, homelessness, loss, and death.
People die here. Weve interred so many its incalculable.
We have literally built our lives and city on the bones of the forgotten, padded it with trash, and paved the roads to make a way for newer things. These memories, these lives are the things we carry every day.
New York has never been kind and it wont be in the coming months and years after a plague has ravaged the entire country.

Both cities were rebuilt because people were willing to work..The people willing to work are leaving and the poor want nothing to do with “whitey” projects....
I can't, but worse, even the people that depend on NY City, can't either.
I read that when the wealthy people started fleeing the city, that they took $334 Billion in wealth.
That is a load of shekels to try and make up.
Really wealthy people can live anywhere and they do not want to be hassled by street creatures in their domain.
They have homes in Monte Carlo, Bali, anywhere they want, and they only lived in NY because it was stylish and chic to do so.
When NY became an open sewer and an open, puss filled sore, many saw no reason to stay.
With no Broadway shows, and no chic restaurants to show off your new diamonds, why stay?
In many countries, that are police states, street livers are confined to the poor sections and will be "disappeared" from the wealthy places.
“The arts? so what?”
Really?
Are you a barbarian with no written language or music?
It’s what observably separates us from the apes.
there are always rebuilders
A lot of people won’t be willing to work but some will. The problem is there are so many roadblocks in the way of rebuilding these days that it won’t happen. Look at the fights and delays over Ground Zero from 9-11. Every proposed project will be challenged and delayed and harassed until a lot will simply give up. Taxes, permits, bribes, sops to low income residents, labor demands, minority interest groups, on and on will sap whatever energy there is to rebuild.
And why rebuild a lot of what is being lost? You can’t have comedy any longer without being cancelled. You can’t establish restaurants that feature $200 mini plates of delicacies or charge $500 tickets to Broadway productions without encouraging capitalism and that is verboten. You can’t patronize a play, a concert, a museum or athletic event without being subjected to the blatant politicization there. You can’t create revenue-generating housing without being required to freeze the rent, or being accused of racist gentrification. You can’t do anything without genuflecting to the powers-that-be in NYC and you have to prepare to defend yourself without significant police backup. Why bother?
I guess.
The arts are overly hyped for being. At least 80% of artists starve.
Being an artist for most is to be parasitic on society.
Ideas like radical Marxism? No, I don't think we need any more NYC generated Marxist ideas coming out from there anymore. Good riddance, I say. Now only if Seattle and Portland would die the same death...
But she recently ‘matriculated’...!
There are differences between a Personal Journal or Diary Blog, as opposed to an Essay or researched report.
I doubt if she is aware of any such distinctions, or if she is, thinks the rules don’t apply to her just because “The Patriarchy” says they do.
I remember way back driving through NYC in the winter and seeing al the winos cover in a foot or more of snow - quite dead you know.
She “matriculated from” it!
Apparently the journalism school she “matriculated from” does not teach the definition or proper use of words.

The only “work” Beethoven or Mozart ever undertook was composition, performance and practice.
They were supported by others their entire lives, from birth to death.
If looks were pianos;
I would be hearing a harshly discordant cacophony of notes right now.
Ella Fitzgerald used to ‘break a crystal glass’ with her high notes on Memorex commericals.
Turns out, the same thing can be done with certain visuals.
She probably masticates her gramma and evacuates her vowels, too.
(I liked Norm Crosby.)
She’s gutter trash.
...or to have people shouting racist pap at them with a bull horn as they try to eat dinner...or having their car smashed and set afire...or having groups in the street threatening to destroy their home or apartment, or being dragged from their vehicle and being assaulted...or murdered.
Variation on a theme:
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to write articles and remove all doubt.
All of which are closed! And I'm not expecting to go to the Metropolitan Opera, maybe ever again. (Had been going to 8 to 20 performances a year since the early 70's.)

Dont like the criticism but you keep voting in pukes who are good at flushing you down the toilet while you sit back and watch. Care so much? do something! or shut the f up and enjoy the chaos
